Neifi is redundant with Nomar coming back. Cedeno can play all the positions that Neifi plays, therefore there is no need for him.

Oh wait, I forgot Dusty is the manager. Silly me.

Let me guess, the throwing hand of the scheduled starters for Fri-Sat-Sun, for the Mets, are LH-RH-LH, right?

That was sarcastically said, but seeing as how the Astros lead just continues to get bigger, I don't see the benefit of giving Nomar a day off RIGHT AFTER HE COMES BACK. But maybe that's just me. I understand "being cautious", but at some point a concession needs to be made - needing to do everything possible to keep Nomar healthy (only play him 3-4/6 or 4-5/7 games a week) or needing to do whatever it takes to try and catch Houston. Playing Neifi Perez 2-3 days a week ahead of a guy like (now healthy) Nomar is not how you play "winning baseball".

But, as I always forget, there is the "Dusty Baker is manager" problem that can't be overlooked.

Hey, idiot manager, how about giving Lee a day off instead of a guy who's been rehabbing for months? Does he seriously think Nomar is going to be too worn out after ONE game? I hate him. Sit him tomorrow in West Tenn if it means he can go 3 in a row in New York.

All hope is lost. Dusty has a ridiculously hopeless man-crush on Neifi that will not go away.

FWIW you do have to remember that Nomar did not play a full 9 innings in every game on the rehab tour in Peoria and West Tennessee.

I see what you're saying, but this isn't basketball where he needs to get his stamina up. If he's feeling good enough to play 5-7 innings, he's good enough to play 9.

Judging by the length of the rehab I agree. I'm just saying for the point of mentioning it that Nomar hasn't been playing a full 9 each game for those that might not be aware.

Even Momar said he might be Neifi's backup in our exclusive interview!

Again, there's that concession stuff I brought up earlier comes into play here.

What happens when Nomar is still only playing 2 of 3 games, no matter what, in early September and getting pulled for his "Defensive Replacement (Neifi)" after 6 or 7 innings in almost every game - because he hasn't played a-or-many whole games since he came back/minor rehabs?

If he is as healthy as he purports to be, then the "kid gloves" need to come off. And as soon as sometime next week, preferably the sooner the better.

So I take it you guys have a lot of experience as athletic trainers, PT's and Orthopedic surgeons? No, I'm guessing you don't.

You have no idea what Nomar's status is right now, what the doctors and his rehab staff are recommending that he do at the beginning and what he feels capable of doing right now.

When a player comes back from an injury as severe as Nomar's was, you don't rush him. You ease him into things and let his body recover. You have no idea what risk factors there are, where he feels pain, what causes him to feel pain and how his body is recovering the day after he plays a full game.

I love how people on the internet think they can diagnose an injury, know what's best for an athlete thousands of miles away whom they've never met before, and think they know more than qualified physicians who are dealing with the athlete daily.

It's ridiculous.

There's a big difference between playing 9 innings on August 5th when you haven't played a full 9 for a majority of rehab assignments and not playing a full 9 regularly on September 1st after playing regularly for over a month.

I wholehearedly agree here. Dusty is probably doing what is right for Nomar in this situation. He probably can't play everyday when he gets back (maybe even for the rest of the year).

And this is coming from someone who wants Dusty out of town. Let's not jump on EVERYTHING Dusty does just because it is something that looks like we can get on him for. The valid points are lost that way.

Nomar's ability to play nine innings and the use of Neifi isn't the crucial point of this thread. The crucial point is that Dusty is running Lee into the ground just like he did last year and ARam is playing hurt and could use a couple days off.

The problem is the no. 1 back-ups at first and third are Todd Hollandsworth and Jose Freakin' Macias. Thanks the the ridiculous make-up of this roster, resting Lee or ARam is tantamount to throwing a game because the Cubs don't have major league caliber back-ups for either one of them.

In case some of you didn't read or listen to it, the question of playing time was a question that I asked Nomar last Saturday. You can find it by clicking the link in my sig.

I really don't have too much of a problem here. I (and I think most people here) didn't even expect Nomar to be back at all this year, so the fact that he'll only play 2 of the first 3 games back shouldn't be looked at negatively, IMO.

I don't like Baker- I think he's a terrible manager who instills a 'culture of no-accountability' on the team- but this is probably the smart move here, and I giveh im credit for it. The LAST thing you want is Nomar coming back and then hurting himself again.

Yeah, I'm pretty much fine with this, depending on how Neifi is used as a defensive replacement ("yes, dusty, the third inning is too soon. let's wait a little bit.").

I really think Nomar's probably going to get hurt again, so we might as well try to do EVERYTHING we can to maximize the amount of playing time he can get with us.

Playing Nomar 6-7 innings the first couple games isn't a problem. If Neifi is starting more than once a week once Nomar is back up to speed, it'll be a joke.

I agree that we need to find a way to get Aram and Lee some days off, but it's pretty hard to do that without throwing a forfeit lineup out there (and we can't afford to lose any more games with all the close ones we've blown).

What does all of this mean for Cedeno? I think it's pretty clear that he should be playing over Neifi, but of course, Dusty would never do that. Neifi is a pretty good backup SS, but now we have 2 on the bench. Are we going to send Ronnie down, where he could actually get some playing time? Get rid of Neifi? I would seem to be pretty pointless to have 3 SS on the team.
