What exactley happend, how did rollins steal home?

Barrett dropped a swinging strike that was in the zone. No way he should have missed that catch. The ball bounced away but not by much. Rollins was stuck 45 feet away from home and Barrett gloved the ball beyond the plate. But instead of running him back, he chucked the ball wide to third, Ramirez gloved it, and had absolutely no chance at Rollins at home.

I have NEVER seen a play like that before.

Holy moley, this game was an atrocity from a fundamental standpoint especially from Barrett.

fixed. He did absoultely terrible today in everything...couldn't play fundamental offense and that play to end the game will be the joke of the year. Absolutely pathetic. I really hope Hank is starting tomorrow.

It wasn't just Barrett. It was the first pitch popups. It was the lack of hustle by the pitchers to cover first. The sheer lack of patience against a starter who has control issues.

This game sucked.

I was completely optimistic at the beginning of the year, and with each passing day it keeps passing and passing. This stupidity is just making me angry.......

This was, without a DOUBT, the WORST game by the Cubs I have ever seen.

They cubs should have won this game, and instead we GAVE IT AWAY. You know what, we didn't give it away. WE BEGGED AND PLEADED for the Phillies to take it from us, and then, when THEY didn't want it, we threw it on their doorstep.

Makes me sick to watch this team play such terrible baseball. I'll quote Ronny, in that "This is the worst fundamental game of baseball I have EVER seen in my life".

F#@$ing outrageous.

Bad coaching? Give me a break. These guys have been playing baseball almost all of their lives. It's not like they've never been told to cover first base or gone over other basic fundamentals.

I'm curious when people who do little but criticize Perez, Macias, Baker, Hollandsworth, etc. will take notice that we have a $3 million catcher who is hardly earning his money. He is one of the few guys I know who hits defensively with men in scoring position. Hey, Barrett, How about yelling, "Get over!", when the ball is hit to the right side. You hear Matheny do it all the time with the Giants. I gave Barrett the benefit of the doubt for far too long. I now see why Felipe Alou said Barrett would never be a major league catcher when he was in Montreal.

Shouldn't Barrett have just held onto the ball? The bases were loaded; where's Burrell going to go? If he touches 1B, you just step on home, if he sits between 1st and home, toss it to Lee and have Lee run him back or throw back home if Rollins comes down the line.

Barrett is not a good catcher, and he basically botched 2 easy plays on one pitch there. No reason for him not to catch the ball clean, and no reason for that stupid throw to ARam, who wasn't even close to 3B.

Burrel was out no matter what. That is not what the issue was, Rollins was coming home (he thought)

You tag home and then run towards third in case you get a runner off guard.

Well lets see 3 pitchers don't cover first base and then to lose like that. that was some of the worst fundamental baseball i've seen in a long long time. Basic stuff, just stupid play all around tonight.

yet another game where the Cubs made too many mistakes to win, but also another game in which the umpiring had just as much to do with the outcome as the opposition.

you know the difference between the ninth inning tonight and Todd Hollandsworth AB in the ninth at Wrigley the other day? the opposition doesn't need to take a hack at close pitches because they're never called a strikes.

another instance is last night. I didn't even think of it at the time because Dempster was melting down, but upon seeing the replays, the 3-2 to Abreu and the 3-2 to Burrell were both called strikes all night.

to be honest, when I saw DeMuth was umping first last night (brought to my attention when he blew two calls agains the Cubs) I didn't think we stood much of a chance tonight.

oh, to only have to beat one team a night instead of two.

Did anyone listen to the radio broadcast? Santo probably died.
Santo didn't die, but he was PISSED. You think Steve Stone was bad last year....

He thought Rollins was coming home so rather than run two feet to his left and stand at home he throws (poorly!) to third???? Barrett is just not good.

i did, he was REAL close to saying Barrett played the worst game he's ever seen in his career before his voice trailed off. Tomorrow is just about a must win situation now, we can't afford to fall back 6 games in the WC chase.

For the love of CHRIST. Our lack of fundamentals lost that game, not covering first, not catching the ball. Not the frigging umps. All pitchers were getting some calls and not getting others.

I've never been a big fan of Michael Barrett personally. I think he generally is a decent offensive catcher - not great, but not bad. I also think he's generally not bad at throwing out runners.

My problem has always been that I don't think he is very good at all at calling games and working with pitchers.

I know it won't happen because Barrett is a favorite of Hendry's, but I think Barrett has value as someone to trade - if you don't watch him everyday but just look at his stats, he's had 2 decent seasons and catchers are NOT easy to come by.

I really wish the Cubs would add to their offense this offseason enough to allow us to add a catcher who is good at calling games and working with pitchers (maybe Blanco could be a starter?). Fundamentally I think Barrett is in the bottom 25% of catchers in the ML.

That said - it was a team loss and not the result of any one player despite how it ended. Face it, this is a 0.500 team.

Yeah, but Sosa passed it to Corey, who passed it to Barrett.
Who cares? A solo shot would have helped immensely in this game.

The Cubs invent ways to lose. Pathetic.

I'm over-reacting, but I would not mind if Barrett got benched for a week. There is no excuse for that kind of mindless lack of execution. I guess its true that the way a team plays is a reflection of their manager.

He's hitting .342 with RISP, so I don't see your point there.

Seriously, he made a bad mistake, but you're overreacting.
