CPatt coming back ought to make things very interesting on the big team. I hope he has gotten his swing fixed and can only help the Cubs...by his addition and by subtracting a Macias/Holla.

I posted this in the "Outfield Alignement" thread, but felt it needed it's own thread. Bruce Levine was on ESPN 1000 a while ago and said that Corey would be recalled in the next 7-10 days. With the 3 coming back on Friday, and then if Corey gets recalled in the next 7-10 days, that's a lot of shuffling. Can't say I'm that big of a fan of this if it's true. :?

Has Bruce Levine ever got anything right?

Yes. Corey's demotion, for example, was first reported by Levine.

Bruce was also first on the Sosa trade, the Ozzie Guillen contract extension, the trade for Gerut, the acquisition of Enrique Wilson, and the Nomar trade just off the top of my head.

A better question is has he ever gotten anything wrong?

A lot of people got worked up over his report that a major trade was brewing in late May. That trade didn't happen, but it wasn't because Levine made it up. The Cubs talked to the Mets and Marlins, but decided on making a smaller deal with the Giants - the Hawkins for Williams and Aardsma trade.

I'm sorry Mr. Levine.

Unfortunately Patterson's stats at Iowa look like his recent Cub stats. He's hitting .217, OBP below .300, a few HRs, and Ks in over 20% of his ABs; against AAA pitching.

I look at it as a learning curve Lefty. If it's true that CPatt will be called up this IMO will be a nice confidence builder for him and we'll see how he hits from here on.

It's not that I think Levine is perfect - I disagree with his ideas about in-game strategy, for example, and he constantly defends Dusty Baker - but it seems like a lot of people on this board consider him unreliable when he is in fact one of the most reliable of the Cubs reporters.

Who would you trust: Bruce Levine or Doug Padilla?

As far as Corey being brought back up, once Nomar returns, center will be our weakest position. Corey's defense is better than Hairston's - though Corey's defense is not as good as some believe. Corey has great range, but he often gets late breaks, he takes bad paths to balls, and he overthrows the cutoff man all the time. Those are problems that he should be able to correct.

Corey has much better power than Hairston, and it would be nice to have his speed near the bottom of the order. There is an argument that, especially in a NL lineup, speed in the 7 or 8 spot is just as valuable or more valuable than speed in the 1 spot. It's often more beneficial to attempt steals when a weak hitter is at the plate than it is to attempt steals when your sluggers are due up.

I really hope that Corey can turn things around and help the team this year. I'm not sure if he will, but the opportunity is there.

who are we going to send down?

If we get Garciaparra, Woodie, Williamson, and Patterson back.

I would first off say the two obvious people to send down would be Mitre and Cedeno, but then who are the next two? Baker seems like he loves Novoa, so I would say the other pitcher would be Weurtz. But, what other hitter would we send down? Murton, he is playing way too well to send down that would just be ridiculous. But we have no one else to send down. We can't send down Hairston, Hollandsworth, or Macias, we would lose them all.

As much as I think that Patterson needs more time, Hairston's bat and defense have been below par. Ever since he has been installed in the starting line-up, the OBP has taken a nosedive.

At least Patterson gives you a glove and I think he is bound to hit better - although maybe not to our satisfaction. The good thing is, they finally have a legit lead-off hitter. If Patterson does come back, I'd bat him 8th with Nomar in the line-up and 7th with Neifi (with Neifi batting 8th).

The sad thing is, Murton is going to get squeezed. In the long run, they may regret acquiring Lawton as opposed to giving Murton an extended audition. But chances are, that wasn't going to happen under Dusty anyway.

Losing Macias wouldn't really be a loss.

Addition by subtraction my friend.

Makes sense. Corey hasn't had to earn a call up in his entire career. Why start now?

I just don't want to hear one single person who supports this ever lecture anyone on OBP.

i like Corey, but IMO i still think he has to stay in Iowa a couple more weeks. I really don't understand why Hendry is trying to rush him back up to the majors when it's clear that his swing hasn't been perfected yet. I'd rather have him stay in the minors until September 1st and continue to improve on the swing rather then experiment on his swing during a game on the big league club.

i really hope this isn't true..

Oh, I don't really disagree with that, but all I am saying is this is Baker we are talking about, you know Murton will get sent down which will just piss me off. I guess come September he will get called back up, but whatever. I don't really like Hairston though. He brings speed of the bench, but that is it. Let Patterson stay in Iowa. Let Bunrie play center, Lawton right, and Matt in Left. LET THE KID PLAY EVERYDAY. Until we start trying to get some of our position prospects into the big leauges we won't ever win a world series. Outside of Patterson who was the last position player we called up that we actually worked with and kept up. And Patterson isn't even up anymore.
