Tampa Bay and White Sox Talking About Aubrey Huff

I don't think any deal is imminent yet, but several sources (including the Tampa Tribune and the Daily Southtown) have said that the two teams have talked about moving Huff to the southside. It is believed that Tampa wants Damaso Marte and Brandon McCarthy in return.

 

I bring this up only because Huff's name has been very popular in this forum. It sounds like Hendry would need his equivalent of McCarthy and Marte to have a discussion with the Rays about bringing Huff to the northside.

 

Feedback on who those 2 players might be from our team/system?

I don't think we have an equivalent to Marte, and IMO, Williams > McCarthy > Mitre. So maybe Williams and Wuertz?

Hill or Williams would be our equivalent to McCarthy, but we have no one on Marte's level in the bullpen.

 

Either way it sounds like they're asking for too much for Huff.

Given the health of the pitching staff, I'm not sure if I'd give up that much pitching if I were the Cubs.

Ditto. I love Sergio Mitre and all, but the depth of this starting rotation is not something I'd like to risk at the moment by trading Hill or Williams.

Huff makes no sense for the Sox. His best position is DH and they already have two guys there. His next best position is left and they can't play Podsednik anywhere else. Right field? They need Dye's defense. Third base? Huff plays it with the alacrity of Lenny F. Harris.

 

The Sox would be smart to upgrade defensively at short and hope the pitching stays hot through the playoffs.

This year Crede hasn't been much worse than Huff though.

 

Crede in 296 AB's: .253/.306/.436 with 13 HR and 48 RBI.

Huff in 360 AB's: .267/.327/.422 with 12 HR and 58 RBI.

 

Certainly Huff has had the better career thus far, but he's also 2 years older, plus the fact that Crede is MUCH better defensively. I just don't see how it's worth giving up McCarthy and Marte for.

One week ago Huff was at .251/.314/.383. Maybe he's just starting to heat up and getting him out of Tampa will get him going.

 

It just seems like a steep price to give up for what he's producing this year.

Huff is a second half player typically. He's a good hitter who got off to a particularly bad start.

 

It's a very steep price, but like you said they have Crede who can fill in defensively in the late innings if they want.

 

I'm surprised they'd trade Marte - good relievers are hard to find, plus he's signed thru 2006 with club options for '07 and '08.

 

If matching that is the price I'd say no thank you.

The Sox don't win because of their offense. They win because they have allowed more than 190 less runs than they did at this point a year ago. They need to upgrade offensively at third or short, but the jump you get from Huff's offense is negated a great deal by the drop off defensively from Crede. You give up too much for not enough in that equation. Even Kenny Williams can figure that out.

they don't really have a set setup man. It's a combination of Marte, Politte and Cotts.

 

if they get Huff, it pretty much means that they won't re-sign Konerko in the offseason. I still think they should go after Burnett rather then Huff/Baez though even if it would be just a rental.

The Sox were crazy not to go after Randa. He would have been a perfect fit and not that expensive.

 

Totally - good call. As said, the Sox big change has been in their pitching, and if I had Marte (especially with his contract situation) I wouldn't trade him with my top pitching prospect for Huff.

This year Crede hasn't been much worse than Huff though.

 

Crede in 296 AB's: .253/.306/.436 with 13 HR and 48 RBI.

Huff in 360 AB's: .267/.327/.422 with 12 HR and 58 RBI.

 

Certainly Huff has had the better career thus far, but he's also 2 years older, plus the fact that Crede is MUCH better defensively. I just don't see how it's worth giving up McCarthy and Marte for.

One week ago Huff was at .251/.314/.383. Maybe he's just starting to heat up and getting him out of Tampa will get him going.

 

It just seems like a steep price to give up for what he's producing this year.

Good point, although Huff last year started late and then was on fire for the rest of the season.

Marte really isn't so great, he allows way too many inherited runners to score. He's a good lefty, but I'd trade him in a package for Burnett/Lowell. If we get rid of him for Huff, I'd be fuming. Huff is a butcher at 3rd. I think we're looking at Scott Eyre and Guardado to fill Marte's spot after a trade.
