Pitcher Matt Clement of the Red Sox left the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning after being hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Carl Crawford. Clement had to be carted from the field on a stretcher. He was replaced on the mound by Chad Bradford.

Just out of curiousity, Matt Clement nearly gets his head taken off by a line drive, his health disposition is uncertain, yet you couldn't resist making this comment comment??

We currently have 3 threads discussing Clement's injury. It is in no way trivializing how terrible we all feel about Clement to point out that the discussion should be condensed. Unless HHH is a doctor in the Boston area, there is nothing more he could be doing at this point.

My thoughts and best wishes to Matt and his family. I haven't seen the clip yet, but what I have seen looks scary. Hope he's doing ok now.

I'll just ask that people post any updates and best wishes in this thread. It's natural that people would start talking about it in other forums after seeing it.

Since the full extent of his injury probably won't be known until tomorrow, it would seem that updating this thread -- instead of any others where it's mentioned -- would be the best way to follow developments.

Actually I posted this in the "Game Threads" topic. A topic that I saw before, and a topic that I posted before this one.

I just saw it on the ESPNEWS "BREAKING NEWS" thing on the bottom right corner of the swing.

I really liked Clement and I wanted him to stay. I'm glad he went to a team I like and I REALLY hope he is okay.

Will do Serena, and thanks for getting this all on one thread - I feel for any pitcher who gets hit in the head, but since Matt was a well liked Cub until recently, I thought people would want to hear about him.

No new news on NESN yet during the game - I expect there will be some announcement after it's over if they even have any new news at all. I plan to watch the whole game so I'll try to update if I hear anything.

Just as an aside - I wish College baseball (maybe even high school and below) would switch to wooden bats - I realize they aren't ML hitters, but there's no reason imho to subject young kids to potential damage from line drives when there's no neccessity.

Latest update now from Red Sox - Matt has spoken with the trainer and is in good spirits - CAT scan was negative and he never lost consciousness. He'll stay overnight in hospital for precaution.

Best news you can expect at this point. I imagine he's gonna have one whopper of a headache if nothing else. I hope he's ok - he's a good guy and having a really nice year so far.

Red Sox game over - no additional news on Clement. He's in the hospital tonight and we'll hear more tomorrow.

Nixon did something to a muscle in his side on a swing - no real information on it, but the announcers are worried this could be one of those things that doesn't heal and he'll be out for awhile.

Last of all - Baez got RIPPED by the Red Sox - first he blew a 2 run lead and the save in the 9th, then he gave up 2 runs in the 10th and took the loss.

It was really weird to see Jeremi Gonzalez pitching for the Red Sox followed by Joe Borowski for Tampa Bay. Gonzalez got smacked around by Tampa, but Joe looked decent - I didn't notice his speed but he got 3 ground outs.

Here's hoping Matt Clement comes back soon and healthy.

I really hope Clement is alright

He's one of my favorite pitchers, and I wish he was still with us.....we screwed up there.

It was about time he was finally getting the recognition he deserved - he's a quiet guy - super nice - and goes about his business without gloating at all. He's slipped under the radar WAY too long.

Is there anything MLB can do to provide protection for pitchers or is this something they just have to accept?

It's just one of those freak plays. There's always going to be balls going right by pitchers.

Now on the college level, I really hate seeing those alumium bats making those real loud ping sounds. It really makes me squirm, becuase I have seen alot of pitchers getting drilled by those balls coming from alumium bats.

I doubt if you will be able to remove aluminum bats anytime soon. The aluminum bat lobbyists are as powerful as the NRA when it comes to the collegiate ranks. :)

Matt Clement Released from Hospital

Less than 24 hours after being hit in the head with a line drive, Red Sox starting pitcher Matt Clement has been released from the hospital. Clement was released from Bayfront Medical Center in Tampa Bay after a second CT scan was negative. The All-Star pitcher was not at Tropicana Field for today’s Red Sox-Devil Rays game, but is scheduled to fly home with the team after the game.

“Matt stayed in the hospital overnight and underwent further tests and observation this morning ...” Red Sox doctor Thomas Gill said in a statement. “Matt will accompany the team back to Boston tonight and be evaluated by our medical staff upon his return.”

It’s not known whether Clement will go on the disabled list, but it appears his time away from the rotation will not be long. Clement was struck in the head by a line drive during the Sox' 10-9 win over the Devil Rays last night.

Clement was carted off the field on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to nearby Bayfront Medical Center.

After the incident, Clement spoke to his wife, Heather, who was back in Boston watching on television with their 4-year-old son, Mattix, according to Axelrod.

''He was kind of joking with her," Axelrod said. ''She said, 'All your runs scored.' He said, 'That figures.' He was worried about that.

''Mattix was sitting there watching on TV and saying, 'Daddy, c'mon. Daddy, c'mon.' Heather said it was all she could do to hold it together."

Awwww ...

Cubs.com[/url]"]Best wishes: The Chicago Cubs players and coaches were a little shaken after seeing Boston pitcher Matt Clement hit in the head by a line drive on Tuesday. Clement was a clubhouse favorite when he pitched for the Cubs from 2002-2004, before signing with the Red Sox this year.

"That was brutal -- I couldn't watch that," Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux said. "I had to look away. You think about it. You hope he gets back. I hope his head stops hurting soon. He's a quality guy. You never want to see anybody hit, especially guys you like.

"Hopefully, he'll get right and get the fantasy football pool going," Maddux said.

Pitcher Mark Prior said he got a message on his phone from Clement, who was watching the Cubs game from his hospital bed late Tuesday.

"That was terrible. That was horrible," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "I'm sure a lot of guys have called. I'll give him a couple days [before calling]."

I bet Clement called/messaged to heckle Prior about getting hit by a worse line drive.

 at the image of Maddux sitting at a computer drafting players for fantasy football.

It may be funny, but the guy knows his baseball well. I wouldn't want to match up against him if that was the case. I would get blown out.
