Matt Clement just got taken out by a line drive to the head. It looked nasty, it sounded nasty.

He's being stretchered off at the moment.

I'm worried.

Matt Clement was taken off the field on a stretcher in the 3rd inning (4th?) after being hit in the head by a line drive. He dropped immediately and they called for an ambulance right away and took him off in a neckbrace and immobilized

He isn't moving very much at all although the camera showed his hand moving slightly and he was breathing.

I'll update more as I hear more. The announcers said it looked like it hit near his ear.

Also - Trot Nixon was taken out of the game after apparently tweaking his back during a swing.

update - saw the replay - he got nailed on the right side of the head/face (probably near the ear) and he dropped to his back immediately and didn't move for quite awhile. The ball was hit so hard it ended up in left field.

Man, I hope he's ok!!

I was watching the game - started a thread in rivalries, didn't quite know where to put it - at the time. It looked really nasty. The sound and the way he dropped instantly.

I'll pass on my good wishes here.

I just saw it on the ESPNEWS "BREAKING NEWS" thing on the bottom right corner of the swing.

I really liked Clement and I wanted him to stay. I'm glad he went to a team I like and I REALLY hope he is okay.

 I hope Matt's okay.

Did they move the mound closer to the plate this year and not tell anyone or something? It seems like an awful lot of pitchers have been hit this year.

No major news yet, but they did an excellent job of "stabilizing him" as best they could and get him off the field in a real hurry. He looked like he may have opened his eyes a bit as he was taken off - announcement just made that he was conscious and alert when he was taken off.

The ambulance took him to the hospital which was only 3 blocks away apparently.

Man - seeing it happen in real time was really bad - he didn't look good at all.

Latest news is:

He was aware of what happened to him, conscious of where he was and alert when he left the field.

That's good if nothing else. Many of us have been "boxed" hard in the ear - considering that's where the ball seemed to hit him (had to be 90mph +) it's good news that he was alert.

I'll relay more if I hear anything - probably won't be much news till the game is over.

I have yet to see it. Where did you guys catch it?

Are there any clips of it online?

I was watching the game live on New England Sports Network (NESN) - looked away for a second and when I looked back I thought there had been a line drive hit over shortstop into left field - then I saw Clement lying on his side/back and realized it must have hit him. Dunno if there are any clips yet, but imagine a line drive coming right back at his head and in slow motion at the last second he turned his head slightly to the left to avoid it in the face and gets literally smacked off the right side of his face/head - he dropped to his back immediately with his hand on the side of his head.

I'm watching, apparently, RAYSTV on MLB.tv. There'll be clips of it at MLB soo n, I would assume, its an article of its own now. Its not for the faint-hearted, either, its numbing.... it was just awful to watch.

Ugh, poor Matt. Hope he's ok.

I know people will want to get updates on his condition ... if you could, please, post any updates to the Baseball Discussions thread on the injury, it would help. (Premium Link). There will probably be updates past tonight, so the ongoing updates on his recovery should take place in the other forum (since this is game-related). Thanks ... and best wishes for Matt and his family.

Excuse me God? Matt Clement is no longer a Cub. He's not supposed to get injured.

Lets see:

Greg Maddux: Narrowly avoids line drive at head

Prior: Uh...yeah

Dempster: Gets lined in arm

Borowski: Injuries wrist (?) in Spring Training

And that's just line drives.

Chad Fox: Boom.

Wood: Pop

Zambrano: Keyboard

Remlinger: Chair

Ah, but don't forget the ex-Cub factor.

For those who pray, pray along with me for Matt and a speedy recovery. Baseball should be secondary to his health right now. For those who do not pray, still keep him in your thoughts.

Latest Update on Matt Clement from the Red Sox

Boston Red Sox pitcher Matt Clement was hit in the right side of the head by Carl Crawford's line drive Tuesday night and carried from the field on a stretcher. Clement could be seen blinking his eyes when he was placed on the stretcher, and the Red Sox said he was conscious and alert as he was taken to the Bayfront Medical Center near Tropicana Field for further evaluation.

"He had some numbness throughout the site where he got hit behind the right ear," said Lt. Rick Feinberg of the St. Petersburg Fire-Rescue.

Red Sox medical director Dr. Thomas Gill said a CT scan was negative.

"I have spoken with Matt and his doctors in Florida," Gill said. "Matt himself never lost consciousness and is in good spirits. ... He appears to be doing well, but will stay in the hospital for precautionary purposes and will be re-evaluated in the morning."

After he was hit, Clement remained on the ground and barely moved for about five minutes before he was lifted onto the stretcher and immobilized with a neck brace. Replays showed the force of Crawford's liner knocked the All-Star pitcher completely off his feet. Gill said Clement didn't move because he was in "Shock".
