this weekend?

The obvious answer is send Ronny back down to make room, and knowing Dusty like we do, that is what's gonna happen.

But the SMART thing to do would be to release Macias outright and make Perez the utility IFer.

No. The smart thing to do is send Ronny down so he can get some ABs instead of sitting on the bench.

Did not think of it that way. Quite right.

Nomar becomes a back up to Neffi.

"Dude's gotta stay fresh"-Ficticious Dusty quote.

With Neffi's timely hitting the last two days the possiblity of Cedeno ever seeing the ball field is pretty slim.

When Nomar and Williamson both come back not only will two guys have to go to Iowa but somebody will have to get DFA'd since there are 39 guys on the 40-man right now.

The smart thing to do would be to release Macias like yesterday but my guess is that Cedeno and Mitre go to DM and Grieve gets released.

Assuming Kerry comes back at some point before September I'd guess Novoa would get sent down to make room for him.

I hope Novoa doesn't get sent down, he has been pretty solid of late and is the only set up guy that is getting the job done right now. I would love to see Novoa, Williamson, and Wood be the set up guys for Dempster. I would guess Mitre will probably be sent down to get some innings in as a starter and be brought if Hill doesn't cut it, or Hill may get sent down.

Isn't there also the possibility that Hendry will open up some roster space with a trade or two that might happen this week? neither Nomar nor Williamson will be back before the trade deadline.

Possible, but all the info I've seen points to Nomar being back this weekend. (Sunday is 7/31)

He's probably not going to be back until next week. He's going to Peoria today-Thursday and most likely to West Tenn after that.

in the telecast on sunday night Dustbag said they thought it would be this weekend so I guess we'll see- I just don't want him to come back too quick-get his timing so he can bring an impact with him-

My guess is that Angel Guzman will be placed on the 60-day DL to clear a roster spot. He's not expected to pitch this year, so I don't see why he hasn't been moved there already.

Hadn't even thought of that. Which means it makes perfect sense.

Agreed; Neifi and Cedeno should be the reserve IFs, and Macias should be released. Neifi can (and has) covered 3B and 2B; Hairston can play 2B obviously and, in an emergency, SS; Walker can cover 1B and 3B if he really really needed to; and Mulletsworth was our backup 1B last year (not sure why Walker seems to have the job now?)

Plus, Hollandsworth and Burnitz and Gerut can all play all three OF positions, and have.

Bottomline is the Cubs have at least two-deep coverage at every position on the field, making Macias 100% expendable. Wasting a roster spot for him is simply inexcusable, and evidence of gross malfeasance on Jim Hendry's part. Because he has better 25th man options than the Gremlin, in the persons of Mike Fontenot (best choice), Ronny Cedeno and even Ryan Theriot.

I have never seen Neifi at 3rd, Hairston at SS, or Walker at 3rd. Is this just speculation on your part? I don't think Walker can play 3rd and I think it would be difficult to have Hairston play SS.

Neifi played 3B to finish a game this year, but Walker can't.

There isn't a major need for Macias, but what's the point of getting rid of him and keeping Neifi and Cedeno? He would be behind Nomar and Neifi at SS, behind Walker, Hairston and Neifi at 2B and at best the 3rd option at 3B. He would get no playing time.

I believe a player on the disabled list would accumulate major league service time. That's probably why such a move hasn't/won't occur.

As much as I hate to see Macias in a uniform, I hope Cedeno gets sent down when Nomar returns. Nomar is hopefully going to start 4-5 times a week and Neifi is going to start the other games, be the defensive replacement, and likely be the first PH off the bench (against either RHP or LHP). I'm glad Cedeno got some time in the bigs, but he needs to go back to Iowa and get some ABs. Let Macias rot on the bench and be the backup 3B and emergency backup at all the other positions he can "play" (at least according to Dusty).

Or, since we have a backup for each position, we could release Macias and bring back a guy who can actually hit and will take a walk (Grieve comes to mind) but what are the chances?

What I'd like to see:

Nomar, Williamson, Grieve, and (eventually) Wood to the Cubs.

Cedeno, Mitre to AAA.

Remy, Macias to the curb.

That would leave us with 6 OFs, which is a lot, but Hairston can backup 2B (and short, if necessary) and Perez can backup 2B, SS, 3B and Walker/Holly backup 1B. Besides, Grieve seems to have done as well as anyone as a PH. When you're talking 25th man, I'd rather have one that can PH than one who plays 6 positions poorly (and can't hit).

Remlinger had two scoreless inngings with one hit and no walks last night. Why would you release him?

So we should keep him because of one good outing?

In just under 30 innings Remmy has a 1.10 WHIP, and is striking out around 7.5 batters per 9 innings. I say keep him unless you have 6 relievers better than him, which we don't right now.
