Rotoworld also speculated this today:

Kerry Wood - Starting Pitcher

Along with placing him on the DL, the Cubs announced today that Kerry Wood would be sent to the bullpen after he returns from a sore shoulder.

Wood could end the season as the club's closer, though it wouldn't make much sense to hand him Ryan Dempster's job right away. Because Wood's shoulder could remain a factor even as a reliever, Dempster still looks like the best bet for saves the rest of the way. That Wood is going to the pen makes it likely that the Cubs will acquire a starting pitcher this week. They'll probably pursue Jason Schmidt if the Giants make him available. Jul. 25 - 6:52 pm et

I'd much rather Alou than Schmidt. If there was any way we could get a hold of just him, I'd do it pretty quickly. Schmidt will cost too much for below-normal production. Alou, on the other hand, could make our lineup downright scary:

1. Hairston

2. Walker (or Nomar if he's productive when he comes back)

3. Lee

4. Ramirez (NOT Burnitz - I hate to see DLee pitched around because he's got Burnitz behind him)

5. Alou (I don't care that it's three rightys in a row - it'd be the best way to construct the middle of our lineup)

6. Burnitz

7. Nomar (if he doesn't produce as much as we'd like; Walker or Burnitz if he does)

8. Barrett

9. Pitcher

Besides, our need for starting pitching isn't as terrible as it may seem - I'd rather solidify the bullpen. Jerome Williams has been doing a very nice job, always going pretty deep, and hasn't yet really gotten entirely blown out of the water. Rich Hill just got a start, and could fill in real nicely - and I believe that if we're not gonna win this year with our young guys playing, we're not gonna win at all, so we might as well play them. And with a greatly improved offense, if our starter gives up four or five runs, we should be able to keep pace much of the time anyway.

Mitre

Hill

Pie

Dop

Wuertz

+ another pitching prospect.

would be my guess...

San Fran is asking the moon for Schmidt.

no way in hell would i do that trade

As I said before:

"I didn't say it was fair. I just said that's what it would take.

Schmidt for Hill, Mitre and Pie. It was reported that the giants were asking for 2 major league ready pitchers and a top position prospect for Schmidt. I think I'm giving Hill and Mitre some credit here.

Alou would probably take Dop and Wuertz at this point."

And I wouldn't do the trade either.

We should have just picked up Alou's completely reasonable option, and then we'd be able to give up less prospects for Schmidt.

The $11.5 ($9.5 net) reasonable option?

I understand what you were saying. I just don't want to see Alou back here. I don't care what is #'s look like, all I now is that the Cubs overpaid for his services the first time around and would pay TOO much this time in prospects and cash. Giants want a ton cuse daddy don't wanna trade him away.

If the Cubs give up Hill it should be for someone who's gonna be in the lineup for years to come. Not someone who's tank is almost empty. Sorry guys, I just think it would be a big, big mistake. IMHO

That's what I was thinking. That option was not completely reasonable considering his horrible defense, base running, age and the sub-par seasons he had before '04.

You don't think .330/.418/.502 at 11.5 million is reasonable?

Even if you don't, I think Alou would have re-signed with us in the 8 million range. That's turning out to be a huge mistake by Hendry, all in the name of team chemistry.

In hindsight it is, but who thought he was going to be able to put up those numbers? No one on this board.

He had one very bad year with us, one average year, and one very good year. He's had injury problems in the past, was awful defensively and on the bases, and is 39 years old. From fans to the media, no one thought that option was reasonable at the time.

Last year most everyone here would have rioted if they picked up that option. If there were many who wanted it picked up and thought it would be a good idea, I certainly don't remember them.

I'd rather have Burnitz' .281/.345/.487 line with great defense at just less than half the price.

It's not so much that Hendry didn't want Alou as he couldn't offer him a deal without knowing if Sammy was staying or going. Sammy's contract tied his hands. By the time he unloaded it, Alou was gone and Beernutz was our only option (Not a bad last option, considering)

As for Schmidt and Alou, I'd love to have them this year. I don't think it will take as much as has been stated on this thread to get them in the fold. Though I doubt it will happen.

Are the Giants looking to dump Durham's salary?? Perhaps that could help ease the number of prospects needed. Durham's obp is 27 points higher than Walker's. Just send SF Walker & Remlinger to ease some of the financial burden.
