The Cubs are 7 and 4 since the all star game, but why am I not happy about this? Still get the feeling that Cubs can't get into the race. Every step forward they take a step back.

The Cards series was great baseball for both teams.

Friday was a pitching gem that could have gone either way. The Cubs blew to many chances and didn't capitalize.

Satuday the Cubs beat the Cards, no doubt.

Sunday the Cubs chipped away and almost let it go but played well enough to win.

I'm still PO about the 2 Cinnci loses to be honest.

I hope I begin feeling better about the team by the end of the week.

I'm jsut not convinced this team can consistantly win with a makeshift #4 and #5 starter. I'm great with someone like Williams as the #5, but having two guys out of five be replacement starters hurts.

I'm hoping Rusch can re-discover that command and stuff as a starter...of course, I'm also hoping Remmy and Ohmann can take up his slack in the pen from the left side.

But getting Nomar back (productive and healthy) would be a nice gain. So would an effective Williamson.

Actually we're 7-4 since the All-Star break. We lost 1 to Pittsburgh, 2 to the Reds and 1 to the Cardinals.

10-4 total since the 8 game losing streak.

Duke pitched a great game against us, the Reds hammered us last Wednesday and all 3 games this weekend could have gone either way. The loss to the Reds on Thursday is the one we really should have had.

I'm encouraged that we won 2/3 this weekend, even if the Cardinals were short-handed. Saturday and Sunday night's wins are the exact type of game that we usually find a way to lose in St. Louis.

This is a big week for us. 7 home games against the Giants and Diamondbacks. 6-1 is a stretch, but we could and probably should go 5-2. We need to start winning games at home.

Getting Nomar and Williamson back in the next week and a half will be a big boost, although they won't be saviors. If we can also upgrade the offense in the outfield, we should be in fine position to win the Wild Card.

By my count, they are 7-4 since the break for a .636 winning percentage. I felt they needed to win 2 out of every 3 games after the break (or a .667 win %) to have a decent shot at the Wild Card, so they are only slightly off the pace.

The good thing is we had opportunities, and should have swept both Cinci and the Cards. The bad thing is we had opportunities and should have swept both Cinci and the Cards. I went to 2 games in Cinci Tues and Thurs and had the opportunity to watch the other 2 since Cinici is in my area. In both losses we should have scored double digit runs but left too many guys on base especially bases loaded opportunity. (I guess thats Dustys fault also) And if it was not for double play Walker Fri we would have swept the Cards. Honestly after witnessing the up and down game Thurs I thought "Oh God here comes another losing streak." So at this point Im Ok with where we are but I do think this week is crucial with 2 sub-.500 teams coming to town we need to take care of business and sweep one of the series while winning the other and we will be in good shape because the Nats and Atl are going to beat up on each other this week.

Excuse me 7 and 4, my mistake.

I hate the fact the Pitching is still patchwork and non-reliable.

How many of you thought of Farnsworth walking in the winning run last night when Dempster blew the save?

I give the Cubs credit for the win. They kept there heads and got the win!

I see this week as a soft sopt on the Cubs schedule and some ground catching should be going on.

This may in fact be a big week when we consider the matchups: Atlanta and Washington will go head to head--both are tied atop the East/Wild Card standings. Also interesting is the Astros and Phillies will go head to head. Both teams are ahead of the Cubs for the Wild Card so yet again, there may be ground to be made. Conversely, the Cubs trail the Mets and are tied with the Marlins. They play the Rockies and Pirates respectively therefore, the Cubs need to handle their own business with the Giants (and diamondbacks afterwards).

This week to me will decide a lot of things for me. First, just coming off a well played series vs. the Cards (not full stregth). Will the Cubs have a let down with the Giants and AZ? The good Cubs team will take care of business and dispatch loses to both teams in both series. Second, will banking on players coming off the DL be enough for this team or will Hendry do anything worth wild?

After those 3 bad losses in a row, I am waiting for the Cubs to go on another run like the 8 wins in 9 games following the losing streak before I get even remotely excited about this team again.

Unless you believe Washington is going to right the ship (I don't), the Cubs are 1.5 out of the wildcard right now. It's going to come down to how they handle the weaker teams and how they play the Astros.

7-4 the rest of the way gives them 90-91 wins and a WC spot IMO. I'd like to see 5-2 in the SF/ARZ series though.

Very few teams in baseball have better than average #4 and #5. Teams settle for average out of these spots, including nearly all of the contenders.

The Cubs are doing just fine plugging in solid prospects to fill the void.
