Pursue it or do it? If you were the Reds' GM, who would you ask for in exchange?

Well, this is the info that our own vance was able to dig up for us:

Spoke with my source and he says info is harder to come by with Pupura than it was with Hunsicker.

Either way, apparently, the Astros turned down the Reds first proposal. The Reds wanted the Astros to part with Backe, Lane, and a minor league pitcher believed to be Patton. The Astros felt that was too expensive and said no. It doesn't mean there won't be a deal, but my source seems to believe the Reds are asking more than anyone is willing to part with.

Apparently they want one young established major league pitcher, one established position player, and at least one top shelf minor league pitcher.

Assuming that is true, it wouldnt be too awful hard to one up that offer. Backe and lane are nothing special.

I think Jerome Williams + Jody Gerut/Corey Patterson + Pinto(maybe rich hill) sounds like a decent package.

I'd do that in a heartbeat.

I'd do that as well, despite the fact the Reds are giving up a position player in Dunn, it puzzles me as to why they would require a position player in return. For, they have Kearns to call up and the primary need is pitching, pitching and more pitching. I don't care how many runs they can generate, they'll never win without pitching. Surely, the Reds GM is aware of this?

who becomes our 5th starter then? serge?

I would be okay with that.

Sergio has done very well as a starter. Not so much as a releiver.

Also, gflore34, i think the reds GM is aware of that. Which is why he wants two young pitchers in a Dunn deal.

Maybe the reds GM is assuming that Kearns will also not be there after the trading deadline. Rumor has it he is on the block too.

Not to impune Vance's source, but, I find it hard to believe that the Astros would've been the ones to turn down that trade. Why would the Reds want that deal? In addition, if you were the Reds' GM for a day, you'd really give up a potential cornerstone for Williams (has made ML starts, but wouldn't call him an established starter yet), Patterson (don't know if you can call him established yet) and Pinto, who hasn't thrown in the majors? My guess is Hill would have to replace Pinto or Hill added. Regardless, if the Reds' GM would make that trade I'd bet you could hear fans screaming all the way from Ohio. At minimum, they should ask for an established major league starter (a #3 or #4 starter), two top pitching prospects and maybe a top position prospect. I don't think a GM would trade Dunn for question marks. I still wouldn't mind Cliff Floyd.

If the Reds want four for one then Hendry should say no way. That's ridiculous and O'Brien should know that.

Rusch, Mitre and an IF position prospect for Dunn and a minor league throw-in.

If you were the Reds' GM, you'd accept Rusch, Mitre and prospect? For all the props Dunn gets here, you all seem to think he's not worth much trading wise. I think the Reds' GM should be smart enough to know if he's trading his cornerstone he should be well compensated for it.

What would you accept for a player of Aramis Ramirez's value? That's pretty close to what Dunn is.

If we get Dunn (highly improbable) or anyone who Ks as much as CP does, I sure hope CP goes in the deal. Should CP return, he'll still likely K a ton except this time he'll actually get hits, but 2 enormous K rate guys is not what I'd like to see.

Based on what we actually gave up for ARam Rusch, Mitre and a high-level prospect is a higher return than what the Pirates got from Hendry.

And if what O'Brien asked of Houston is true, this deal would equal or beat that. The bar has been set.

Please don't compare Dunn with his .240 BA, horrible defense, and 8 trillion strikeouts with Ramirez. With all of these outrageous proposals (and demands from the other side), I'd rather try to get Kearns. As Kaspar & Brenley said, with Dunn it's either a HR, K, or a walk.

What makes you say Dunn has horrible defense? Because he's big?

Almost every advances statistical measure puts Dunn ahead of Aramis. I think it's a very fair comparison.

Dunn and Ramirez were basically equal in production last year, and Dunn is outproducing Ramirez this year. He's also younger than Ramirez.

I know you harbor some serious man-love for Dunn  , but of all the things that Dunn does well, defense is not one of them. The only reason he doesn't seem as bad as he is is Wily Mo Pena is about 1000 times worse. I can see tons of reasons to acquire Dunn and ways in which he can help this team--defense is not among those.

You can't compare the two. Ramirez's value is MUCH higher now than it was when we traded for him. Dunn's value now is much higher than Ramirez's was in '03.

When we traded for him, Ramirez was closer to what Kearns is than Dunn. He had one big season, then followed that up with a very poor one, and was off to an average start in '03.

Kearns had one very big season, an average to above-average year in '03. Since then, he has had injury problems, not gotten a ton of playing time and struggled when he has played.

I still would really like Kearns. I think he could have an Aramis-like rebound in new place when given regular playing time. He would also come much cheaper than Dunn.

Backe/Lane/Patton is not that hard to beat.

Kearns' big year was a fluke. He had a ridiculously high BABIP that is completely unsustainable. He had a great minor league career, but his major league struggles since then make me wary of acquiring him.

So do I.

I can't imagine the Astros turning that down, especially with their like of local guys and Dunn supposedly wanting to play in Texas again. They would have him at least through 2007.

I'm not saying Dunn is a God with the glove. But he's serviceable with the glove. And at LF.....who cares? He gets what, 3-4 chances a game? And that's on a busy day.

If we could get Dunn for Rusch, Mitre, and an IF prospect, Hendry would have made that deal a long time ago.

Yea, It was a quick five minute throw-together. I coulda picked someone with a better fitting uniform for dunn, but i just used the first person i had on file (matt clement), so its a little off.

It looks dumb because of that big shaddow over his eye. In his picture his hat is tilted more.
