There goes yet another option for our outfield. I am pretty content though on just seeing how our youth works out.

Wow -- so I guess Payton is staying in Oakland then.

Things are starting to pick up fast -- I love this time of year! :D

Come on Jim -- work some magic, but don't wait too long to pull a deal or else don't bother.

Wow, now the Rockies will be contenders. I bet the fan base is sure to attend the rest of the games now!

So Oakland went from Bradford, Byrnes, and a prospect to Payton, Witasick, and Kennedy? Unimpressive IMO.

Agreed -- I'm a Beane fan, but I wish he would find something "undervalued" in Enrique Wilson and Jose Macias.

I don't get the fetish for Kennedy, but Witasick is someone that right now is very tradeable or someone they can keep.

10+ K/9 with only 2 HRs allowed in Coors?

Nice.

He's basically equivalent to Bradford. Seems like a lateral move to downgrade in the OF and pick up a horrible SP.

They also just cleared a pretty decent amount of payroll. Couple that with the five million or so they had to play with before the season even started, and then they have space to make a pretty significant move if they so choose.

At this point in their respective careers....

Witasick >>>> Bradford

The talk was that Bradford was done after being used so much in Oakland since they got him. Last year he was more hittable, gave up more HRs, and lost alot of his control, basically the three attributes that made him such a good reliever.

Adam Dunn?

well i'm more than thrilled that we didn't get Preston Wilson and just as thrilled that we didn't get Byrnes. Now let's hope Hendry can pull off the mid-season magic once again and get Dunn.

Okay, I just had a chance to look at the numbers, and I don't see Oakland clearing any payroll.

A's send:

Byrnes= 2.2 million

Bradford= 1.4 million

Total= 3.6 million

A's recieve:

Payton= 3.5 million

Kennedy= 2.2 million

Witasick= .316 million

Cash= -?

Total= 6.016 million - cash from Boston

So in order to free up any payroll, they need to get at least 2.5+ million from Boston. So even if the Red Sox pay all of Payton's salary, Oakland doesn't free up more than a million(500k in essence since half has been paid) in payroll.

don't forget that san diego is paying part of payton's contract, too.

That's true, SD is paying 2.65 million. However, like I said before, even if Oakland doesn't have to pay a cent of Payton's deal, the most money they free up is a million.

I wish I'd read ahead, and saved myself the effort on this stuff.

EDIT: According to the report from the A's site, the Red Sox sent some cash in their deal, and the A's sent some cash to Colorado in their deal.

The A's do indeed pay nothing to Payton, but once you consider that they sent some money to Colorado, this looks pretty empty. Randomly shuffling the players, basically.
