I just got back from a business trip in the Miami area. The Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald (and sports talk radio) are convinced that the Marlins will trade AJ Burnett before the deadline - even though they're in the race, they know Burnett won't sign with them, so they prefer to get something for him before he walks. The main suitors seem to be the White Sox, Orioles, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Padres and Angels. The Jays and Sox seem to be the most aggressive, although I haven't heard names for CWS. The Jays would deal Gustavo Chacin if Burnett would sign an extension. The O's would part with Julio, Bigbie and a pitching prospect if Burnett signed an extension. Watch this one closely.

The Astros are shopping for a bat; the Red Sox are shopping for bullpen help. Kevin Millar is very unhappy in Boston; Chad Qualls is reportedly unhappy in Houston. These two have been linked in a deal by Newsday.

Why would the White Sox be looking to add a SP, rather than another bat?

They're not happy with Contreras and El Duque. The consensus seems to be that the Sox feel they have enough offense to win.

P.S. The other thing the papers down there made very clear: the Marlins were very embarrassed about being man-handled by our Cubs. McKeon was even quoted to say that a sleeping giant may have been awoken. The Pirates series is huge for psyche - players, team and ours.

From what I'm hearing on the radio here in Chicago, KW is convinced they need a stud arm to go far in the postseason. They still do not have a starting pitcher that can consistently miss bats at a high rate. AJ could be that arm. Buehrle/Burnett/Garland/Garcia would be a pretty formidable playoff rotation.

I really hope they don't get AJ. :(

It would be awesome if the Cubs started generating some serious fear in the rest of the National League. I can't wait till this team finally reaches its potential.

No, IF. It's always IF.

Getting Burnett would be a really good move for the WSox.

As long as he stays healthy, sure. But he's even more injury prone than Kerry is, and he's a FA at the end of the year. His road splits stink, too.

I'm confused...was he saying that the Cubs were the sleeping giant, or that the Cubs made the Marlins look bad and it was a wake-up call for them?

That's funny, it seems to me, they NEED a bat (ahem at 3rd, and maybe even SS) moreso then they need another arm. Besides I don't believe the current White Sox has what "IT" takes to go deep in the playoffs. For some reason, they don't have "IT". The Red Sox had Curt Schilling. The Marlins had Miguel Cabrera. The Angels had David Eckstein (believe it or not). So again who is the "IT" factor for the White Sox, cause I don't see it.

Scott Podsednik is the "IT" factor for their offense. The guy has been electric on the base paths. He's every bit the "IT" factor of a David Eckstein.

He was referring to the Cubs as the sleeping giant....hope that is the case.

Living in the Boston area now I'm confused as to why Houston would be looking at Millar if they need a bat  Ok, that was a bit harsh, but Millar has looked pretty pathetic this season so far and opens his mouth every time he has an opportunity when he isn't started. The only thing he ought to be upset about is his poor performance this year - Boston has Olerud and Youkalis who should by every right should be sharing the starting duties at 1B for the rest of the season.

I personally think it would make Houston a worse team if they traded for Millar, so here's hoping they do it.

i agree. No one knows for sure what El Duque's age is and many people think he's at least 40. He has been very injury prone this year and you never know what your going to get from Contreras...one start he can be real good, the next, he can walk 8-9 guys. A rotation of Buehrle-Burnett-Garland-Garcia come playoff time would be pretty scary to say the least.

I don't see Chi-Sox (or Stros - edit: nm Stros have not been mentioned with AJ, just in same thread) getting a shot at AJ if Toronto is willing to move Chacin in hopes that they'd be in strong position for resigning him. Chacin's both young & cheap and has enjoyed a strong first half of his rookie season. Roy & AJ would be a great duo for them. Their payroll is thought to be upward-bound & they'd still have plenty of young & cheap players to allow for a solid allocation Burnett's way. Edited by c3ci1

I was browsing WSI last night (bored out of my mind w/o any baseball); the posters were throwing around names like Marte, Borchard, McPrior, Anderson. Not realizing that the Marlins have better deals from the O's and Jays that include a couple major league players.

One guy posted that they should trade Konerko for AJ; it took them over 2 pages before someone remarked that the Marlins had Delgado at 1B.

None of them seemed to realize they need more offense.

As well, I believe there is a decent bond/good relationship b/w Burnett & the former Fish (now Jays) pitching coach.
