I hate the all star break.

Here's a game to kill the time as we endure this insufferable lack of Cubs baseball.

We all know that this team is missing some key ingredients to make it successful. Suppose you could add some former Cubs to this year's roster. Who would they be and why?

The rules:

1. No hall of famers as that makes it too easy

2. players must have actually played a regular season game for the Cubs (so no Dontrelle Willis or Andy Sisco)

3. pick one starting position player, one bench player and one pitcher

I think this could be interesting to see who people pick.

I'm assuming we can add players when they were in their prime, so here's mine:

- Starting player: 2001 Sosa. Duh. (He's not in the HOF yet)

- Bench player: 1998 Gary Gaetti (With Aramis at 3rd, Gary's riding the pine)

- Starting pitcher: 1984 Rick Sutcliffe

Here's my picks:

Starter

1989's Jerome Walton. He was everything Baker thinks Patterson should be. He got on base and played solid defense.

Pitcher

1984 George Frazier. After coming over from Cleveland in the Sutcliffe trade he was a brilliant set up man for Lee Smith.

Bench

I thought about Larry Biittner but the Cubs already have a poor man's Biittner in Hollandsworth. I'll go with 1984 Thad Bosley, a great PH for that team.[/b]

Alou - Gosh, I miss his offencive production

Vizcaino - Still a very good utility player, and imo, better than any of the utility guys they have now

King - obviously, he has been very good out of the bullpen for the Cardinals.

Of course, once Baker started misusing King & Vizcaino, they would commence sucking.

Augie Ojeda, I'm sure Dusty misses him. He was the best toothpick fetcher of all time. Hawkins I'm sure Dusty misses him closing games. I apolgize for not posting seriously at this time....I'm at work not enough time to post a serious thought.

I thought about Hebner as he eliminates any justification for Macias being on the roster. I loved "The Hacker"

Player: Andre Dawson.

Pitcher: Rick Sutcliffe

Bench: Mark Grace...only reason hes on the bench is because we have D.Lee

I would be adding Ryno, but he is now in the hall of fame

But with those 3 former cubs on this team, we would be in a lot better

I'm going with the "in their prime" context as well:

1. Rafael Palmeiro - position player (put him in RF)

2. Lee Smith - solidify the closer spot

3. Mark Grace - bench only because I'd love to see him come up with the games on the line.

If it has to be a "true" bench player, I guess I would pick Glenallen Hill

The 2001 Sammy Sosa is an easy lock. But, assuming that he will be a HOF, I won't choose him. Instead:

1. Rick Wilkins, 1993

2. Paul Assenmacher, 1990

3. Dwight Smith, 1989

I went with only players that were still active, but I guess that wasn't in the rules :?

So, if I could pick anyone....

I pick:

1) Ivan DeJesus

2) Pete LaCock (no kidding)

3) Oscar Zamora

How about Eddie Zambrano, Kevin Roberson and Tuffy Rhodes, our outfield of the future.

Blech. I think they were each fighting for the HR lead in AAA and Rhodes is the only one who had any sort of impact, owning Gooden on opening day.

I'll take this in two angles.

The first, I'll choose former Cubs who are still active as if I have to have the numbers they have this season.

Pitcher: Tom Gordon

Position Player: Moises Alou

Bench Player: Matt Stairs

Ok...now just adding any former Cubs from their prime year:

Position Player: 89 Shawon Dunston

Bench: 89 Lloyd McClendon

Pitcher: 89 Les Lancaster

Ok, I know I chose all 89 Cubs, but with the hole at shortstop and our weak bullpen, I think those guys could help.

Pitcher - Flash Gordon or Kyle Farnsworth (in most odd-numbered years)

Starting player - Luis Gonzalez. Didn't do a ton with us but I wish we had kept him for more than half a season in 1996 (I think it was)

Bench player - The immortal Thad Bosley

I seem to be older so I'll go older.

I want a pretty good shortstop so I'm going with mid to late 50's Ernie Banks.

I want a utility type player who can play 3B, LF, RF, 1B and who can C if necessary. This guy would complement Hollandsworth perfectly. Give me Keith Moreland.

Pitcher? Dempster has settled in at closer so I'd take either of these guys and use them in the 8th; Bruce Sutter or Lee Smith.

I think the reason nobody has included Ernie is because one of the criteria was that you couldn't name HOFers.
