  1. It's like evaluating a QB by W/L record and pass attempts. Like Brady? Or like Trent Dilfer with the 2000 Ravens? I think the point is that with wins & losses, you have to look at context. I don't think of Wood as an elite pitcher, but to hold his W/L record against him without considering the atrocious bullpens we've had in recent years and poor offense is unfair.
  2. Contrary to popular belief Wood HAS modified his mechanics over the past few years. To completely change how a pitcher throws immediately can be equally damaging. I think Wood's mechanics were better this year, but his shoulder problems go back to years of poor mechanics in the minors and probably when he first came up.
  3. 1980 - 7 years old growing up in Ohio. My first T-ball team was the Cubs and we got WGN for the first time. Throw in a bunch of summer trips to Wrigley over the years and the rest is history.
  4. You're probably right. Valentine is a Lasorda favorite. From what I heard, it's Lasorda who wants Bowden as well.
  5. Evidently the umpires will yell "No catch" if they don't think the catcher caught the ball clearly, whereupon the catcher will tag the runner. Evidently Josh Paul says Eddings didn't say "no catch". Probably should have tagged the AJP anyways but still....
  6. Seems like he's taking the old "Yeah, I took it, but it was an accident" route. Nice try, Raffy! How could he not be "careful enough"? Especially now after all the attention on steroids?
  7. I believe it was Dennis Eckersley
  8. I just don't see it. If Wood is always on the DL how much could the Cubs get for him anyways? But if he's healthy why wouldn't the Cubs want to hold on to him? Plus that no-trade clause thingy....
  9. Just heard on ESPN Radio that Murton is playing today and batting 6th. Hope that's right....
  10. Same here. Haven't heard Wood mentioned at all.
  11. I just like the fact that he sounds like he just woke up when he's interviewed.
  12. It didn't exactly get off to a roaring start when Joe Buck called Derrek Lee "Carlos" when going through the lineups....
  13. Pitcher - Flash Gordon or Kyle Farnsworth (in most odd-numbered years) Starting player - Luis Gonzalez. Didn't do a ton with us but I wish we had kept him for more than half a season in 1996 (I think it was) Bench player - The immortal Thad Bosley
  14. Just heard on ESPN Radio 1000 that Remlinger is on the DL with a broken finger
  15. Bob Brenly "Jason Dubois is country strong" That's just what I was thinking. I saw the Cubs in DC last weekend and the ball absolutely jumps off his bat. He hit a drive to right-center that short-hopped the wall on a night when absolutely nothing was carrying out that way.
