After watching half of today's early game, it has become obvious that the Cubs aren't going to catch the Cards or the Braves. This Braves team with a roster full of rookies is kicking our behinds on a daily basis. Also, don't forget that this Brave team is waiting for the return of Hampton & Hudson. I guess we can hope the Braves win their Division and some mediocre team ends up fighting for the WC. Let's quit kidding ourselves into thinking that one hitter or one relief pitcher is going to turn this club around. I agree with all of the other posts that Baker, Patterson, and Macias have to go. I think Mitre, Rusch, Patterson, Dubois, and prospects should get us young players who can help us in the next few years. If Hendry can make any deals that turn this year's club around with Baker as manager, he deserves the title "Executive of the Century."

Hendry should sell what he can, but I don't see a whole lot to put bargin basement tags on. Walker likely has some value due to his position, his bat and his contract. I don't see a lot of teams lining up for Maddux in light of his option and struggles (notwithstanding his no trade clause).

You can't trade ARam or Lee as cornerstones. He wouldn't get the proper value for CPatt at this point. Burnitz may have some value, but I can't believe it would be much.

Wood, Prior and Z are unlikely to go anywhere, though I'd consider a blockbuster with Z. Rusch may be a good candidate to relocate.

At the rate we're going, we may be sellers by the All Star break.

I only see three guys on the current major league roster as no trade guys if we want to compete in the near future... Prior, Lee, and Ramirez.

The sad part is there really isn't anything to sell. We'e not going to get anything for AAAA players like Mitre, Dubois or Patterson. Maddux isn't going to approve a trade unless its to Atlanta or SD, and they don't want him. Wood has to prove he can stay healthy before we can get anything close to fair market value for him.

Bingo. Sell, sell, sell...and we'll get more AAAA players in return. Dubois, Rusch, Mitre, et al...nobody's going to give up much for our role players.

Combine a couple of those AAAA players with a Rich Hill, and you get something. Rusch also has value. You have to remember that there are teams out there with dire pitching situations and offense to give. When you are a team like Cincy or Texas, a Mitre, Rusch or Hill looks very, very good.

I don't want to trade Rusch, he's done a lot for us.

Everyone who wants to trade Wood is insane. This guy has the chance to be a top level starter, and you want to trade him to someone else? I know he's had a lot of injuries, and is still working on figuring it out, but guys like Schilling wnet through the same thing early in their carrer. BE PATIENT. When he figures it out (hopefully sonner rather than later) he will be the man. Hopefully, his smoother motion will help take strain off his shoulder.

There is a reason teams keep calling to ask about Wood. Do we really want to give him up knowing we'll have to face him eventually?

Rusch has done a lot for us, but his value is at its' peak, and I don't think he'll keep it up. He can opt out of his contract after this year if he wants, and if he maintains his numbers, he'd be crazy not to.

Obviously this team is going nowhere

Here are some of the moves I would make if GM:

Remlinger for a mid to low level prospect, bring up Hill

Rusch for a mid to high level prospect, bring up Welly or Aardsma

Maddux for one to 2 mid to high level prospects from Ana or SD, Leicster

Hollandsworth for a mid level prospect bring up Grieve

Patterson for anything bring up Murton

Release Macias bring up Fontenot

Release Neifi once Nomar is 100% healthy( might even be a good idea to shop Nomar & see what you can get for him) Cedeno starting SS

Moving one of either Walker or JHJR might not be that bad of an idea either, bring up Kelton

BTW, Firing Dusty is the 1st move.

One prospect I don't bring up is Pie, maybe during roster expansion, but not right away. Let the 20 year old develop. He is the future!

Thankfully you are not the Cubs GM.

But seriously, your're right, lets trade away all of our major leagers and turn the team into the Brewers. In fact lets trade Prior too. You obviously don't want to win ever again given your willingness to trade away several quality players: Rusch, Hollandsworth, Maddux. Also, lets trade them for prospects. Yeah, that makes since. WE HAVE PROSPECTS.

The Cubs are in a serious funk, but thats no reason to press the self destruct.

As far as firing Dusty, who do you hire? Who is out there to hire? Did you think about that?

I posted a couple days ago that I thought we would lose out to the break. Call me a jinx or a sage, eh.

Patterson had a decent start to the season as the leadoff hitter. Not great but it was ok. Walker goes down, in comes Hairston and he bumps Corey to the #2 spot. Nomar goes down and Corey slides back to #3. I read a comment elsewhere that Dusty give him every opportunity and batted him everywhere. I don't trade Patterson. I let a real manager put him in one spot in the lineup and freaking leave him there! The way Dusty jerked the kid around from April forward is reason enough to send him packing!

Burnitz: A tough trade because you need a team with an open OF or DH spot who needs a 6 hitter from the left side. Baltimore could use a right fielder ;)

Hollandsworth: A quality off the bench guy who can help a team, just need a team that needs a LH bat off the bench and he's cheaper.

Rusch: A back of the rotation guy who can slide into the pen once you get to the playoffs.

Dempster: A team needing a closer or a setup could find lighting in a bottle on the cheap, seriously.

Walker: As much as I like the guy and view him as the team leader, those a qualities that can be sold and Fontenot could be brought up.

Maddux: We'd have to eat some salary but I'm sure he'd go to selected contenders.

Perez and Macias: I have no problem with these guys, assuming we are talking about a utility infielder and the 25th man.

Baker: FIRED!!!

Why sell, the core of this team is very solid. The upcoming FA class is very weak. Regardless of the outcome of this season the Cubs need to be buyers, because they will fill the holes with better quality players than they will through FA.

I get what you're saying. You want to deal volume of AAAA/AAA/AA players for Adam Dunn. I'd ship 40 man/40 man this winter pitching to the pitching staved Reds for Dunn. No problem. I'd still look to ship guys like Holly and Rusch to free up playing time for kids and FIRE Dusty if he didn't play them.
