Bruce Levine was just on Mac, Jurko, and Harry. He said the Cubs are looking at three relievers right now:

Baez - Tampa Bay

MacDougal - KC

Affeldt - KC (he's on the DL right now)

He also said the Cubs continue to talk to Colorado about P Wilson.

Glendon Rusch is apparently available, although he probably wouldn't be involved in trades for any of the above players.

Did he say a trade was eminant within the next 2 days?

[Piling on]Ironic that those two KC relievers' availability is likely, at least in part, due to the presence of Andy Sisco.[/Piling on]

I don't trust Levine much at all, but if he's right, I sure wouldn't mind Baez on this team. He'd be a solid addition to this team as a set-up man or maybe even a 7th inning guy. I'd rather we stay from MacDougal or Affeldt.

And Hendry, stay away from Preston Wilson, please!

Can't remember where I read it, but it referred to Rusch and Patterson as the 2 best "available" trade chips Hendry has.

By the way, if we got one of those KC relievers, I wouldn't mind seeing Matt Stairs and Tony Graffanino come along for the ride too. Stairs over .800 OPS and Graf's ability to play 3B/2B would mean less Todd Hollandsworth and cutting Jose Macias.

For what it's worth, after the Latroy trade went down, Levine said that Hendry had talked to the Mets and the Marlins about a bigger trade that would have included Latroy and other Cubs players or prospects. Rather than do a bigger deal, Hendry decided on Williams and Aardsma.

I'm just guessing, but I'd think a deal with the Mets would have included Looper and Floyd or Cameron. A Marlins deal might have included Encarnacion or Conine (ugh) and Mota or Jones.

From everything I've read, Juan Encarnacion is still very available. At what price, I have no clue.

Is Cliff Floyd still available?? I doubt it given the Mets inability to score runs and Floyd's big numbers. Still wish the Cubs could have got Floyd instead of Hairston. Hairston's had a nice year, but Baker doesn't use him right. At least w/ Floyd, Baker would bat him where he should be, 4th.

Oh lord, wouldn't that be great.

Juan is 29. He's been a regular player for 7 years now, and has been a consistent 700-760 OPS player, and at least for the past 3 years, he's consistently declined significantly in the second half. So, while his 2005 numbers look nice, they are completely out of whack with his career, and not likely to be sustained.

Career: .266 .315 .441

2002 - 2005: .260 .313 .435

I'd rather have Preston Wilson than Juan Encarnacion.

But, then again, I don't want either.

Agreed. I'll take Matt Stairs over either of those 2 guys any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I wasn't advocating that Hendry get him. I was pointing out that he's being shopped.

the price will be high on Baez , I wouldn't mind either of the Royals relivers because there still young enough to take steps forward and can be pieces of a solid pen for years.

Why are we looking at Baez when we've already found an effective closer? Or would this relegate Dempster to setup man/Baez to setup man? Dempster back in the rotation?

I think we found a role Dempster is comfortable with, it'd be a shame for the Cubs to screw it up. Especially since TB always asks for a lot when they deal, it seems really pointless to me to try to get Baez.

Looks like my year might be shot if Rusch is dealt.

It's nothing personal of course, but Rusch has incredible value at this point. I'd be offering him up to San Diego for Josh Barfield or X Nady right now. San Diego needs a 5th starter badly right now.

Would Arizona be interested in him for Conor Jackson?

I'm surprised that there hasn't been more mentioned about Glendon at this point. All those teams in need of pitching should be knocking on Chicago's door first. If it took a Scott Kazmir to get Victor Zambrano, I want a Scott Kazmir type prospect for Rusch, preferably a hitter though.

I don't think Hendry would deal for Baez to knock Dempster out of the closer role, Baez would be nice in the eight with Wuertz ,Ohman, Willamson ,Rusch for the eight. I think Remlinger will be dealt. I think we will have to be a closers ransom to get Baez though question is he more effective than other set up man on the market? Would Hendry look to get Huff or Lugo in a package deal from Tampa?

I might be offering Mad Dog to San Diego instead, even if that meant a lesser prospect or eating more money. MD would have fewer homers hit against him in Petco and he would be close to home. I just don't see a role for MD with the Cubs next year.

Yeah, but KC would be smart to trade for Sisco's Rule V rights so they could send him down to AA to retool him as a starter. Otherwise it would be a wasted draft pick IMO. Trading Dubois and Sisco's rights for Affeldt sounds like a decent trade to me.

I've been trumping Stairs for quite sometime and I hope he's added to the club regardless of whether the Cubs make a major OF addition.

Honestly though, do you see any circumstance in which the Cubs release Macias ? By all accounts (Hendry's comments, Baker's love), Macias is considered a valuable part of the Cubs by the management. I'd imagine the only one sitting there rolling his eyes at Macias in organizational pow-wow's is Fleita.

What is the freaking game plan here? We get more relievers to hold down teams next to nothing I guess since the offense can't score any longer?
