You score points in softball?

I was distracted by DANICA sorry . We score [runs].

Danica is hot and all, but I was always told to stay away from fast women...

Maddux is performing just as I would have expected him to... good but not great. Barrett would be better served with better lineup management...

Maddux has been good? Oh, that's right, he has seven wins.

Perhaps you should look at Barrett's career numbers vs. just what he did last year. Dusty deserves plenty blame, but this isn't Playstation, guys who have played baseball all of their lives should already know the game instead of still having to learn some of the basics.

It probably should also be mentioned that the Cubs have like 14 games remaining against the Cards. Thats a lot of games with half of the season over. If the Cubs play well vs the Cards...they easily could come back within the division.

Yeah, the way we're playing right now, those games frighten me. While I think this team has what it takes to right the ship and make a run at this thing, they need to do it before those Cardinal games start. Those could be devastating if we're not ready.

My thoughts exactly. While it's great we have a chance to come back... it's also entirely possible we'll be highly embarrased... and being embarrased by the Cards is not my idea of a good time.

We have 14 games left with the Cards. If we won ALL 14 OF THEM, we'd only be up a game and a half. 14 games is not enough any more...

Is it kind of like Homer Simpson's boxing strategy? You know the one that consists of getting punched in the face the entire fight and then pushing the opponents over because they are so tired from relentlessly slamming you in the face as hard as they can. Because if it is like that, then we are looking pretty sweet.

Hadn't thought of it that way... I suppose if you give up enought runs in game one, they'd be so tired of runnign the bases they'd be pushovers in the rest of the series...

Of course, we'd be terrible at that, what with our pitchers getting all those outs...

How is this style attributed to Homer and not Rocky!?

Because Rocky actually did hit back... Homer didn't.

A team with all-stars at the corners and 4 all-star pitchers in the starting rotation, not to mention an all-star SS returning for the last two months, certainly has what it takes to win in the second half. We have to start playing up to our capabilities and we'll all be pleased with the outcome.

It starts tomorrow......Go Cubs!

I appreciate the sentiment, but having 14 games left against the Cards is hardly reassurring.

"Easily"?

The 1951 Giants trailed the Dodgers by 13.5 games in August and came back to win. The '78 Yankees trailed the Red Sox by 14 games in July and came back to win. The "Miracle" Boston Braves of 1914 trailed by 15.5 games in July and came back to win. The '95 Mariners trailed the Angels by 13 games in August and came back to win.

Off the top of my head, that's the complete list of teams that have ever come back from a deficit of thirteen games or more, which is what the Cubs are looking at after close of business on July 6. So the Cubs won't "easily" come back. They'd have to mount one of the great rallies in the history of the game.

The Wild Card is doable. Not easy, since they trail by six games and have five teams ahead of them in the standings, but doable, especially if Wood can put it together in the second half. Not the division.

The Cards sit at 54-30 now. They have 78 games left, and if they win only half of them they will end up 93-69 on the season. The Cubs, who are at 40-42 now and have 80 games left, would have to go 53-27 in their remaining games to make it to 93-69. And does anyone see the Cards playing .500 ball from here on out? I don't. I consider these next 2 Braves games far more important than the 14 with the Cards.

Agreed. Forget the Cardinals. The Braves should be the only thing the Cubs worry about.

The Cards have a bunch of games remaining against NL wild card contenders and I hope the Cards win every one of them. The only 14 games I want them to lose are the ones against the Cubs.

Good point. As much as I hate to see the Cardinals win, we're probably going to need their help down the line. :shudders in disgust:

So by your post it can be done and its due for it to be done again.
