How much has his injury impacted this complete bullpen collapse? Obviously he has no impact on home runs, what he has control over is limiting baserunners which and consequently multi run home runs. Their inability to win on the margins can be the difference between an extra out here and there in addition to Nico playing gold glove defense at second base. 

Am I being a prisoner of the moment?

I think you are right. The defense masked the terrible pitching the Cubs have had. They are still good defensively, but with Dansby at SS and Nico at 2nd they hide a lot of bad pitching. I can confidently say the team has lost at least 2 games, and possibly even more, they would have won with Dansby at SS.
