I don't have any links, but I'm hearing from a number of people that various radio stations (including Sporting News Radio) that the Sox are close to dealing McCarthy and others to San Fran for Jason Schmidt.

Anybody else hear anything?

edit: i was slightly off. they never actually said mccarthy's name.

Typicall, isn't it? We are struggling to score any runs, and the Sox, who have done just about everything well, will strike first and make themselves any better while we wait for July 30 at 11:59:59, at which point the Cards will be 15 games up.

Schmidt's been struggling this year with lost velocity. The Pads just finished pounding him today to the tune of 4 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, and a 3/3 K/BB. His control has gone flying out the window this season with a 1.59 WHIP and his ERA's sitting at a comfy 5.11. His G/F ratio is also sitting at .94, so I'm sure pitching in the AL version of Coors for half of his games will do him well. He'll be an upgrade, but whether or not he'll get his stuff back remains to be seen.

Sabean has shown that he's completely lost his mind this past year or so, as evidenced by his choice in FA acquisitions and the Hawkins trade. Wouldn't surprise me if the Sox somehow manage to pull this deal off without trading one of their top three prospects.

Buddy, there's no one out on the block that we need, or do you want us to pull the trigger on Preston "I hit .200 on the road," Wilson?

Be patient.

If the Sox were to trade say, McCarthy, Marte and a mid-level prospect, I'd take that chance if I were Kenny Williams. Schmidt looks spent so far this year, true, but his upside if he gets perfectly healthy is so high...this is the kind of high-risk, high-reward trade the Sox need to make if they want to be equal players with the Cubs in the Chicago market. With their great first half, it would take a complete meltdown for the Sox not to make the playoffs, and such opportunities are so rare for them that they need to capitalize and give themselves every chance they can to finish the job. Forget the future: were I a Sox guy, I'd say go for it. This looks to be their year.

In a short series playoff, throwing Buerhle, Garland, Schmidt and Garcia out there would be just plain filthy. Wow.

Well before today he had thrown sixteen straight shutout innings with 15k's, so maybe he can turn it around.

Didn't see today's game, but in his last few starts, he seemed to realize he couldn't throw the high heat past hitters anymore (which seemed to be his biggest problem).

I don't think a SP is the White Sox pressing need. In a 7 game series Buerhle, Garland, Garcia, Contraras is still extremely formidable. I'd still take Prior, Zambrano, Wood, Williams over that but the margin is lessening day by day

The headline stealing, make a trade for a questionable player just to make the Cubs look bad by comparison, trade is becoming an annual event.

Kenny Williams will be look like a genius for a couple weeks until Hendry makes his annual deadline deal. At which point no one will remember or care who the Sox got because no one cares about the Sox.

I'd be very wary of bringing in Schmidt. The Sox would probably benefit more from adding a bat rathert than another starter.

Sounds to me like this is the main rationale for making the move. Is that what you're saying? If that's true I wouldn't do it if I'm the white sox. Joe McCarthy is a pretty big prospect isn't he? And Marte, I believe (without consulting his stat line), is steady.

So why fix what clearly isn't broken? You don't make a big name trade for the sake of the big name when you're contending to win it all . . .

yikes!

maybe he'll accuse ozzie of being a communist or something.

brandon mccarthy is a pretty big time prospect, though ;)

I understand what you're saying though. We all expect a better team and we do indeed deserve it.

List of players to not get rid of:

Starting pitching staff

Ramirez

Lee

Dempster

Nomar

The rest can send their bags packing.

Why do you want to get rid of Walker, Hairston, Barrett, Cedeno and Wuertz?

Put Cedeno, Barrett and Wuertz on that list of stay/

The rest can go to a contender or something.

Just tired of this offense not producing.
