Some interesting, if not incredibly depressing, comments from Jed's recent interview with Gordon Wittenmeyer.

On non-tendering Schwarber in 2020:

Quote

We just didn’t have any money after Covid. I had to cut money and that was the move we had to make

Jed's comments indicate that they liked Schwarber, had confidence in his abilities, and wanted to keep him, but had no choice because they couldn't afford his arbitration salary.  If that doesn't tell you the Ricketts family only cares about money, I don't know what else does. That is just an awful way to operate a large market team.

Who the hell is “We” Jed? The Ricketts were horsefeathers billionaires before, during and after Covid and they are the owners of the club. 🙄

Wasnt Schwarbers arb projection like a whopping $1M more than what Jed signed Joc Pederson for?

Yeah, but functionally, Joc had a $4.5 million salary with a $2.5 million buyout which would have been paid after the 2021 season.  The $8 million Schwarber was projected to get would have all been payable during the 2021 season, so there was a $3.5 million difference in that season's payroll.  It's still utter horsefeathers that they went that route, but it was more than $1 million.
