What the heck has Dubois done to Dusty? I haven't seen his name in the starting lineup in what seems like weeks.

Dubois last started on Thurs 30 June vs. Milwaukee.

06/14 - 07/05 AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
Dubois 22 3 4 1 0 2 11 2 1 7 0.182 0.250 0.500 0.750

And when Dusty trotted Macias out to pinch-hit with the bases loaded yesterday, I nearly popped a blood vessel.

Is the Creature hurt? Or just in the doghouse?

Pinch hitting.....

07/03 AB R H 2b 3b HR TB RBI BB K HP SF BA OBP SLG OPS
Dubois 12 1 2 1 0 1 6 2 0 5 0 0 0.167 0.167 0.500 0.667
Macias 28 1 7 3 0 0 10 1 1 3 0 0 0.250 0.276 0.357 0.633

Get some medication for that blood pressure problem, eh?

Rem in as a long reliever was silly. Mitre and Rusch are the more obvious choices to come in in the fourth inning of a game in long relief situations. Nevermind that the lineup was stacked with lefties.

After the Cubs scored three runs in the 7th to get back into the game, a runner was at third base with 2 out and the pitcher slot at bat. Instead of ph'ing Hairston, good ol' Macias (who was fighting off an injury to his wrist) was selected as the pinch hitter. Ok.

If nothing else, this game once against demonstrates the stupidity of a 12 man pen. If the long relievers aren't used for long relief, I can see why Dusty can burn through them.

Was Hairston unavailable tonight or something? I don't understand why he didn't start in the first place. If you want to get Gerut into the lineup, why not just put him in LF? Why screw with a lineup that's been scored 7/8 runs daily, unless Hairston needed a day off that badly?

Not to mention Lefties that have OWNED him. Rusch seemed like the obvious choice in that situation to me.

It doesn't matter how many arms are available to Dusty, he has his "boyz", stats be damned. Seven relievers gives him seven more possibities to mis-manage the pen. I would have gone with Mitre last night. On such a warm night he might have got that sinker going and would have kept the Cubs in the game.

Exactly. It doesn't matter how many pitchers are down in that bullpen because Dusty is only going to use the same 4 pitchers over and over except on days when he's got guys written into the "Needs to Pitch" category.

Thing about Macias is, did anybody actually expect Baker to do anything different in that situation? I knew it was going to happen three hitters before he got to the plate.

Look at his options:

Murton, Hairston, Blanco and the worst player in the history of professional baseball at any level.

and remember Dusty's logic:

"Gotta go with the worst player in the history of professional baseball at any level, he's a switch hitter and they have a right-hander on the mound. Besides, he's due!"

A bit harsh to call him the worst ever, isn't it?

Never figured out how he always made a roster - career OPS barely over 12

My Favorite - the fact that his name was changed to that (born Zuck) shows exactly how bad he was

Dusty was as stupid as ever today. The difference is this time I got sunburned all to hell watching it.

I know this has been mentioned repetitively, but Dusty's refusal to play kids is hurting this franchise.

His big excuse is that we are in a playoff race and he has to "win" while trying to develope But guess what, so is Atlanta and New York. Year after year, Atlanta and New York are in the playoffs, yet Cox and Torre always find a way to develope talented young players while they continue to contend.

I was wondering if Cox and/or Torre run a managing clinic, perhaps we can send Baker there in the offseason. Better yet, lets save the cost of tuition and just hire some of their assistants -- Joe Girardi and/or Fredi Gonzalez.

anyone blaming baker for losing this game, i hope not, if a manager has a bullpen like he has he can only pray that someone will get someone out. it makes no difference who he uses it is sa crapshoot and one dusty will probably lose. most of the time one is as bad as the other. if people think a manager can win with a bullpen like that they are dellusional. last nite mitre comes in first pitch, home run. today wuertz l inning, home run etc etc. blame baker if you like but better put the blame where it belongs on the gm.

I couldn't believe my eyes when Maddux swung away into the DP in the fifth. Why not try a squeeze, or at least show bunt there? Anything to put pressure on the defense. One poor Cub fan in my section upon seeing Baker's complete lack of creativity jumped up, did a dance and slapped his head. He was an older gent presumably fed up with spending his waning days watching Dusty ruin the lives of several million Cub fans.

Why pull Maddux in the sixth? The weather was unbearable, but Maddux hadn't pushed himself much, and he had a relatively low pitch count. The pen needs work, sure, but if that's true why go there when we didn't have to?

Starting the eighth with Novoa and no one stirring in the pen was an unbelieveably optimistic choice. The kid did well to get out of the seventh ... why push it?

Walking Griffey in the eighth was stupid. Kearns has been hitting well at Louisville, was salivating at the chance to contribute and has been a Cub killer since coming up. Everyone in the park saw his hit coming ... I make Griffey beat me.

Not to mention the fact that had we gone into extras we'd have done so with a lineup double-switched into oblivion with Neifi and Macias up to their old tricks.

Baker's prints were all over Wednesday's loss as well. The criminal misuse of the pen has been covered, but there's no way Harang goes nine if this club had any notion of how to work a pitcher. Baker tells the guys to go up there a hackin', and by God that's what they did ... all freaking night, even when Harang was on the ropes late.

Dusty is an idiot.

Mike Kiley[/url]"]The bullpen allowed another six runs in a 9-6 loss after Greg Maddux turned over a 5-3 lead to his relievers after five innings. Maddux was unable to continue after throwing just 71 pitches in five innings because he was affected by the heat and humidity in Cincinnati. He struck out four, leaving him two strikeouts short of becoming the 13th pitcher to 3,000.

''I started seeing those little white things floating around,'' Maddux said of succumbing to the conditions.

When did those cobwebs start to hinder his vision?

''Maybe the third inning,'' he said. ''It kind of spooked me a little bit seeing those white things. I just didn't feel right.''

I take back the Maddux portion of my rant. The rest stands.

I dunno ... I'm one of the few remaining Maddux fans (and I must admit to not seeing a game for the past week), but "cobwebs?"

He's never really pitched well at GABP; that's about the best to expect for a day game with high heat. But Maddux will pretty much always say whatever he's supposed to say. I would guess that he probably was spent after 79 pitches in 5 innings. I'm still a little surprised that he'd say that.

Really ... did he look like he was about to collapse from heat exhaustion??? :?:
