Any lingering doubt that Toronto would take McKenna because of their desperate need for defense and availability of Reid at 1 has probably been put to rest. They pulled off a sign and trade for Raddysh.

The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the market by landing one of the NHL’s top pending free agents in a blockbuster sign-and-trade deal on Friday morning.

The Leafs acquired offensive defenseman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a draft pick and signed him to a massive eight-year contract for more than $8 million a season, a league source confirmed to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun. The lucrative payday makes Raddysh, 30, one of the highest paid defensemen in the NHL after having never earned more than $975,000 in any previous season.

I hate this time of year because every trade rumor and FA prediction is "here's how the top 6 teams in the NHL are each going to add four more all-stars"

That’s not how I see nhl offseasons. It’s more about teams just restringing their own guys and like 2-4 difference makers move.

And on that note, Dickinson signing for 5/20 with oilers is good work by him.  A 4m hit is reasonable right now but that’s a long time to be tied to a guy that doesn’t score. Edmonton better hope that McDavid loves him.

Every rumor I see involves Colorado, Florida, Tampa Bay, Vegas, etc.

Colorado is like the one team that can’t afford to add. Toronto is the one team that has done anything and they suck. Florida could add a small piece. Probably same for Tampa. Vegas is gonna Vegas. But they probably are gonna lose a piece or two before adding.

Sounds like Brady Tkachuk is going to join his brother with the Panthers for picks.

I think the Blackhawks 4 matches what Ottawa got, but not sure Brady is the type of player Davidson wanted. He’s a good player, but more hyped by proximity to his brother and Olympic glory rather than NHL production.

I would have been happy with Chicago making that overpay.

I would too but I doubt Brady wanted to come to Chicago.

Stan doubling down on his Blackhawks guys, signing Murphy to 5/20.5

4+ cap hit isn’t bad for a dependable second pairing D man, but Murphy may be entering third pairing territory, especially for a team with Stanley cup aspirations. Again, gonna assume McDavid likes him.

Devils trade Nemec and Tsyplakov to Calgary for a defensive prospect 2 firsts and a second.

Devils needed to clear out some D, but they need to acquire a scoring forward. A couple of late first rounders may help that, but not moving the needle for a big name. They also would love to move Dougie Hamilton to clear cap space.

The trades are flying. Sharks trade from their perceived glut of forwards, dealing Eklund to Ottawa for the 9th pick that was acquired for Tkachuk. Probably increases odds that San Jose has space in forward group to draft Stenberg at 2, and deal with D depth at 9.

STL also traded Kyrou to Washington for the 16th pick.

Jackets trade some pick capital for Colorado's Valeri Nichushkin. Solid vet with several years left on his deal. Indicates Columbus is building for the short/medium term for once

Waddell offered little insight in a news conference Thursday, but he confirmed that the Columbus future of Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Zach Werenski is very much up in the air.

When asked pointedly whether Werenski has requested a trade, or has made it clear to the Blue Jackets that he doesn’t plan to stay with the club after his contract expires following the 2027-28 season, Waddell demurred.

“I think, for right now, there are some matters we’re dealing with that should probably stay internal,” Waddell said. “My plan is still to meet with Zach in the near future and see where he’s at.

“We’ve had conversations with his agent, but there’s been no definitive plan for sure.”

Now the rumor is that Zach told Waddell, "you have one more year to improve things or I'm out." Who knows. Werenski isn't an outspoken guy, but he's never been more valuable (and he knows it), so his patience for playing on middling teams is running thin. Between the Olympics and winning the Norris, he's more "known" across hockey than ever before.

I hope his demands (if he's actually making them) push the front office to make a push this year.

In 2021, Red Wings take a goalie with 14th pick, develop him for 5 yrs. He becomes a top goalie prosect. The Wings trade him for the 23rd pick of 2026 draft, a player who will take 3 yrs minimum to reach the NHL......it makes no sense!!
