You all might be talking about it in the game thread but I’m ignoring the Cubs tonight. Big enough name to get his own thread IMO.

If he’s not the GOAT, he’s on the very very short list of greatest players ever

Damn, a lot of sports legends passing away recently.

I fear that some classic rock legends are going to be leaving us soon as well.

The last true baseball legend?

There is nobody else still living that is even close to him.

As a kid, I considered players like Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, etc. to be the All-Time baseball greats.  Some of those guys were around for a long time, but sadly, I don't think there is really anyone who has taken their place over all those years.

Who do today's kids see as the living legends of baseball?

Ken Griffey Jr.?

Cal Ripken Jr.?

Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens, even with their tarnished reputations?

Woulda been Trout if he had stayed healthy.

Steroids or no, Bonds is in the top 5 all time, imo.

If you want to go older, Pete Rose? Another tarnished reputation.

Sandberg, Maddux, Ohtani, Trout, Bonds, Mke Schmidt, Randy Johnson, Scherzer,

I know I've said this before - I once saw Bonds hit an opposite-field home run on a broken bat in Joe Robbie stadium. That's the most amazing thing I've seen live. The 2nd most (on the bad side) was seeing Prior get hit in the elbow. You could hear it from the bleachers. It's the quietest few minutes of a sporting event I've ever been to.

Living players in the all-time top 30 by fWAR

Position Players:

  • Barry Bonds
  • Alex Rodriguez
  • Mike Schmidt
  • Rickey Henderson
  • Cal Ripken Jr.
  • Albert Pujols
  • Wade Boggs*
  • Mike Trout

Pitchers:

  • Roger Clemens
  • Greg Maddux
  • Randy Johnson
  • Nolan Ryan
  • Bert Blyleven
  • Steve Carlton
  • Pedro Martinez
  • Justin Verlander
  • Mike Mussina
  • Fergie Jenkins
  • Curt Schilling
  • John Smoltz
  • Tommy John
  • Kevin Brown
  • Clayton Kershaw
  • Max Scherzer

Things are looking a little slim on the position player side of things. Steroids and general douchebaggery have taken their toll, as have injuries.

But the pitching side has legends to spare.
