As with the Mervis call up, the 'for who' answer is almost more fascinating.

  • Even temporarily it doesn't make sense to be for a pitcher given how much the pen was used this weekend, also the only RP who pitched both Sat/Sun is Alzolay who isn't going down.
  • A minor injury or "injury" to Wisdom or even Seiya would make some sense, but both pinch ran yesterday
  • Velazquez would seem like a strange lateral move that isn't accomplishing much besides saying 'good job' to Morel's AAA performance

Which means, did Mervis do enough quickly enough to make them comfortable cutting Hosmer?  If not then someone else has to have an unknown injury, and it's probably a DL'able injury as opposed to having the flu or paternity/bereavement leave, since for a 48-72 hour turnaround my guess is they'd bring back Mastrobuoni first.

Velazquez has 16 PA in 11 games since Bellinger got back from paternity leave.  They can't possibly be shuffling just for that purpose.

Gives them a guy who can back up CF and he gets the PAs Wisdom has been getting since he's in such a funk right now?

Backup CF is a good point, but this is almost a little annoying. Dumping one guy doing well to bring up another instead of getting rid of some dead weight.

I wonder if part of the idea too is that more and more days off for rest are going to be given to the regulars now that we're a bit deeper into the season and some dings and dents have been accumulated.

Hoerner, Happ, Swanson, and Bellinger (aside from his paternity leave) have largely been iron men.  Wisdom and Mancini are each currently on pace for damn near 600 PAs as well.  There's likely more playing tabs up for grabs than there has been up to this point.

That said I'd have probably held out on making this change a bit longer, because I'm a bit worried about Morel getting 4 starts a week as currently constructed.

Yeah, Not going to be a lot of opportunities at the positions he's played here in the past and he'll have to share DH.  Gonna be tough to get him regular at bats which won't help his cause.
