I know this is an old thread, but i seriously, seriously hate the old guard of Cub fans that pull the "you're just a kid, you don't know pain, I'm a third generation Cub fan."

Guess what, I'm 23, and I'm a third generation Cub fan too. I die a little bit everything we suck. You aren't special just because you're old.

check me out 4th generation

none of you know pain

I don't agree that only older Cub fans feel pain; anyone watching the last week of 2004, or games 6 and 7 of the 2003 NLCS, felt pain. Us older fans (I've been following the Cubs since 1969) simply have been feeling the pain longer.

Count me on the bandwagon. I went to Mesa this year specifically to watch the Creature make the team. I've gotten his autograph on his player page in the Cubs Media Guide two years in a row now. And just today, I had a premonition about him hitting the 3-run blast. Right when he stepped into the batter's box I had the strongest feeling the he was going to hit a HR. I had been feeling negative about the Cubs all game until he stepped in the box for that at bat. All of a sudden, my mood changed and the very distinct thought that he would put the Cubs up by 2 runs entered my head. I told my wife just to document the prediction and sure enough...

I tell you this, if the wind is blowing out of Wrigley, if i'm the opposing pitcher, the last thing on earth I want is Dubois to drive the ball. Trick for him will be recognizing when the pitcher wants nothing to do with him, and taking the walk. But anytime the kid sees a ball he can slam, he should be swinging.

Jason is strong.

Bob Brenly "Jason Dubois is country strong"

That's just what I was thinking. I saw the Cubs in DC last weekend and the ball absolutely jumps off his bat. He hit a drive to right-center that short-hopped the wall on a night when absolutely nothing was carrying out that way.

Nice fluffy article on Jason du-BOYCE in the Sun-Times today.

"Whatever Dusty puts out there is the team he wants out there to win,'' Dubois said, sounding like a rookie who wants no part of any controversy. "He's a great manager. He knows baseball, he's very easygoing, he keeps everything loose. He's a great guy to play for.''

Ask Dubois how tall he is, and he will tell you, "6-4, 6-5, somewhere in between.'' Ask him to give a scouting report on himself, and he'll hesitate before saying, "Aggressive, plays hard, never wants to lose, always wants to win -- that's pretty much it.'' But ask Dubois to name his favorite pitch to hit, and his answer is unequivocal: "Anything out over the plate.''

The knock on his game is twofold: He's prone to striking out, and his defense is only so-so. Of course, most power hitters are prone to strikeouts, and Dubois, who looks big enough to play tight end for the Bears, is definitely a power hitter. As for his defense, well, he's working on it. Having played mostly right field in the minors, left field has been an adjustment.

"I'm still learning a bit, especially at Wrigley with the [nuances] in the left-field wall,'' he said. "But I'm getting better.''

"I watched him in spring training, and he'd always be staying late, taking extra hitting, putting in the time,'' Santo said. "He's taken a little longer to get here, but a lot of players come into their own later.''

Anxious Cubs fans hoping Dubois will come into his own this season are not alone. Dubois has waited a long time for this chance. He thinks he's ready.

"I always feel like I can make it,'' he said. "Like I can go up to the plate and get a hit. I always know I can make that catch. And I know I can get better.''

Jason had a very good game last night against a soft tossing lefty (going 2 for 3 with 2 walks). I think over the last week he has shown signs that he is begining to adjust to the bigs.

I think he will have a great June.

I have mixed feelings on Jason Dubois.

These are just some of my thoughts. Please feel free to give your input & thoughts on what you think of JD now & what you think he will bring the Cubs in the future.

Positives:

His walks last night were very encouraging.

Has prodigous power if picthed down the heart of the plate.

Showed he can go to the opposite field if pitched on the outside corners.

Hasn't made many if not any baserunning errors, which is encouraging for a rookie.

Consistently hits the cut-off man & doesn't try to do too much with his arm.

Negatives:

Still gets fooled often by off speed stuff, but looks like he's improving.

Very shaky defensively in the LF.

Patience @ the plate is improving, but still a weakness.

I wish Dusty would seperate in the order the best he can Burnitz,Corey & Dubois. Maybe put Barrett in the middle of those 3. Those 3 are bigtime K/free swing hitters.

Thoughts???

I think Jason's defensive shortcomings are over-emphasized. He's just fine most of the time in left.

Here are some of the things I see JD do that makes him shaky in LF:

Doesn't judge balls well hit over his head (especially @ Wrigley). However with more experience playing @ the friendley confines I believe he will improve.

He moves well from right/left ot left/right for a big man. However, he still needs to improve on the angle he takes to the ball.

Again, I think all of these tendancies will improve with more playing time.

Right now I would consider him an avg. to below avg. defensive OF in the ML. Just my :twocents:

Left Field is newer to him, I believe he was a right fielder before. Plus he's a rookie, we can't forget that, so he's learning both the league offenisvely and defensively. Experience will benefit him, but I'd agree in putting someone more consistant and feared behind him. He'll eventually adjust to the breaking ball down and in and when that happens, look out.

Another day, another hit for Doobs.

In his last 14 starts he has got at least 1 hit - he has not had an 0 fer in all that time! The guy is consistent. Keep waiting for a few good games in a row from Jason, but I love this consistency.

If he could get a week or so straight of FULL games maybe he'll get a chance to get into a groove. I really like his promise, I don't know why but I think he'd be a fine corner outfielder for this team.

I stopped worrying what the Avon Virtuoso says about me quite a long time back. But nevertheless, you might find these Dubois splits interesting.....

Dubois AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
04/04 - 05/09 31 4 9 3 0 3 21 9 1 13 0.290 0.313 0.677 0.990
05/10 - 06/08 78 8 20 7 0 2 33 11 5 26 0.256 0.318 0.423 0.741

Overall 109 12 29 10 0 5 54 20 6 39 0.266 0.316 0.495 0.812

Fred,

Those splits seem to say he performed better while coming off the bench. It makes perfect sense. He mostly played against lefties in the first month or so, so I would expect his numbers to be better.

But that doesn't mean he should not be getting most of the starts in LF. Clearly, given the way Hollandsworth performed, Dubois deserves the increase in playing time, and the Cubs are better off with him starting in LF over Hollandsworth.

Master of the obvious, no?

It was fun while it lasted. I doubt we see Dubois until we see a LH pitcher.

I think it might be a little sooner than that.

I'd like to see Dubois get more playing time. But you have to admit, Hollandsworth is pretty hot right now (7h/15ab's, 8 rbi last four games). And if the Cubs want to get back into the race, Baker has not choice but to go with the hot hand.

Yup, he has been playing very well as of late and we really can't complain since we are winning games and that's the bottom line. But, I like seeing the Rook start.

The problem is that there will now be very little opportunity for Dubois to be the "hot hand", even if Hollandsworth struggles.

Well Holly has gone from .200 to .254 in the last week and half. You have to be swinging the bat pretty well to do it. Doobie will get his at-bats.

During the first 5 weeks Holla played 75% Doobie 25% and Holly sucked.

During the next 3-4 weeks Doobie played 75% and Holly 25% and Doobie was adequate at best.

Now the last 2 weeks they've probably played half and half, and Holly is on fire. You gotta ride it.
