Uhh

My speculation:

The Bears are very seriously considering Flores and either

1. Digging for info from those who know him

2. Interviewing his choices for GM

Both Ossenfort and McKenzie as candidates seemingly came out of nowhere and have Flores ties.

It just sucks these key hires are in hands of an ownership that almost always chooses the wrong guy and does the wrong thing basically, immune to getting things correct. I have to think McCaskey has heard this, is pissed off and determined to get it right. Still doesn't fill me with much confidence, let's hope lady luck is in the Bears corner for a change.

Even if I look league wide, the hit rate has to be considered a roll of the dice, right? 1/4 of the league has a HC opening this year for example.

If we're counting George as chairman as the current iteration of ownership, this will be key hires 6 and 7. "they're due for one!"

(jk I know the logical fallacy of that. Bears are probably rolling like a 12 sided die anyways)

It's simple, stupid. Hire the guy who has an awesome offense and can scheme around talent AND has shown the ability to develop a young quarterback. It's the best odds out there.

Stop horsefeathering around with defensive coaches who leave big question marks open on offense

This sure as horsefeathers sounds like something an even self-proclaimed casual fan of today's NFL would know, no?

So the Bears interviewed both Joe Schoen for GM and Brian Daboll for HC, and I’ve seen some unconfirmed stuff floating around that it might be a package deal, where Schoen goes to the team that says he can hire Daboll or vice versa.

Based on the game yesterday I’m sure Daboll has jumped at or near the top of everyone’s list, so he will probably have the luxury of more than one suitor to choose from.

Obviously it's hard in general to know a ton about GM candidates, but Schoen seems like a really blank slate as to whether I should like him or not. But Daboll would be one of my top choices at HC so I can't say I'd necessarily complain.

I know both of these guys have substantive backgrounds beyond the Bills but I do kind of hate the package deals from a single org idea.

Reggie Mckenzie was a pro personnel guy with the Packers for a long time under Ron Wolf and Ted Thompson. He was very highly thought of and worked his way up to director of football ops. Was a pretty hot gm candidate about 10 years ago when he took the raiders job. They were way over the cap with very little draft capital and so he was put into a pretty tough situation. He drafted Carr and Mack and the raiders found some success, but then they hired de facto gm Jon Gruden and McKenzie didn't last long after that. You could probably do a lot worse, even though he isn't very exciting.

It seems like the Bears are really making a significant effort to interview African-American candidates for the GM openings.

Glenn Cook

Reggie McKenzie

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah

Champ Kelly

Morocco Brown

Rick Smith

Omar Khan

Ran Carthon

Interesting to see a very insular organization be more inclusive. Obviously making a hire is quite a bit different, but it's good to see more interview opportunities, at least.

Yeah it seems to be a consistent enough theme that they're clearly making a concerted effort. On top of that too I assume that Kelly, if he doesn't get a full GM job here or elsewhere, seems likely to be the #2 in the new FO.

It’s interesting as Polian has made some interesting comments about black players, specifically QBs, in the past

Given the news about Flores and Watson potentially looking to team up wherever he goes, and the fact that he was ready to give up on a young QB after less than a year, should we be concerned about that if he came here? Would they really trade Fields for Watson (maybe not directly, but basically swapping the QBs on their roster)?

I didn't think much of George's comments that were non-committal about Fields. I didn't see it as a rebuke of him, just him not trying to limit his pool of candidates by saying they must work with Fields, but now I wonder...

On the flip side, I'm not sure the McCaskey's would want the massive PR hit they would get if they traded for Watson.

My understanding is the 22 sexual assault allegations are still outstanding with no clarity on any kind of resolution, although someone apparently leaked that Watson is open to a settlement (in ONE of the cases, not all).

My god, what would it say about the Bears if they did this? I just don't know if I can be onboard with it. It's more than a PR hit for me. It's: do I want to be a Bear fan anymore.

Players? Or one player, when he gave the opinion he thought Jackson was better suited for wide receiver? He admitted he was mistaken about that and he also hired Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell with the Colts.

Yeah, I mean, I saw him missing targets by like 10 yards at the NFL skills competition and didn't think Lamar Jackson would ever be a remotely viable NFL QB

obviously was extremely wrong and probably shouldn't have based anything off of this lol

Yeah maybe he just hates Lamar. He was also one of 3 (out of 50) people to not vote Lamar to the All-Pro team after 2020. But either way, comments like the one you mention perpetuate the stereotype that black people are not good QBs, however innocent his intentions were.

It was just strange. Josh Allen was even less accurate than Lamar in college and Pollian compared him to a young Jim Kelly/Peyton Manning. This was after his rookie year when he had a 52% completion percentage and 10-12 TD to INT ratio

I mean Lamar is obviously a good QB but he's still extremely inaccurate and I think everyone would take Allen over Lamar at this point.
