That leaves ~$900K to cover overslots on both Triantos and the Day 3 picks.

I'd originally guessed Triantos would go ~$300K over, but who knows?

I have $903,670 exactly. I’d guess Triantos gets more than half of that.

I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if Triantos eats almost all of that up and takes $2 million.

So I’m a long time follower of Cub’s drafts because let’s face it, hope for the future defines Cub fandom. I can remember drafts with Oscar Gamble, Peter LaCock, etc. But a couple questions on this discussion.

Is Triantos really that much of an overslot pick? He appears to have been chosen about where he was ranked by most experts. Would he have reclassified from 2022 to 2021 if he wasn’t serious about playing professionally and soon. If he doesn’t reclassify he’s still going to be eligible to get drafted at age 21 after two years at UNC.

Isn’t Glenn Cunningham an ideal candidate to sign? He’s committed to the University of Chicago and if you look at their conference it’s not a who’s who of college baseball. If the Cubs can offer college scholarship money is there a reason not to take it and play baseball at a level that affords him a decent opportunity at being a professional? Not that logic always plays.

We'll just wait and see.

1. The way Kantro raved up his hitting, you'd think Kantro will pay whatever it takes.

2. On the other hand, Kantro talked about how his Day-2 drafting had been strategized to leave a bunch for Day 3 overslot signings. So at least as of Tuesday or Wednesday, Kantro certainly believed that there would be a healthy chunk available. Who knows?

“We were able to take some more risks, and at this point, I’m not so sure about whether we’re going to sign everybody that we selected (Tuesday),” Kantrovitz said. “But just based on how the draft rules work, there’s probably some players that we were able to take a risk on and kind of shoot for the stars and hope...

“I still don’t believe that we’re going to be in position to sign all the picks that we took (Tuesday) but certainly a few of them, and that’s sort of a rare position to be in on Day 3 to be able to buy a player out of (going to) college and send them immediately to professional baseball,” Kantrovitz said. “That was probably a product of our strategy on Day 2.

“If you are strategic about how you’re managing your pool, and if you have some flexibility going into Day 3, it enables you to be a little bit more aggressive. We saw the fruits of that play out (Tuesday).”

That makes me want to root for Riley Martin even more! Chemistry major, conference all-academic, 2K/inning in D2, would be super fun if the $1K guy pitched his way into the major leagues! I love the human-interest stories.

Should have given him $5K like they gave 10th rounder Peter Matt. He’d feel a little better about the offer and $4K doesn’t matter big picture wise.

I like the strategy. Gets you some high floor college players and high upside, higher floor high schoolers in Rounds 1-10. Then you get to buy some high upside high school lottery tickets in Rounds 11-20. Then UDFAs become what was your Round 20-40 picks. You just hope they picked the right players or strategy doesn’t matter.

He may be. He was a bit of a late riser due to the reclassification, and there was talk of him sneaking in at the end of the 1st round. But we'll find out soon enough. Obviously we all hope he isn't.

What makes me suspicious that you’re more correct than not is that he’s the lone draftee from the first 10 rounds who’s bonus hasn’t been announced.

Applying Gray's ratio of bonus to slot, Triantos would check in at $1.8 or so.

Seems about right. I'd probably take the under, just slightly.

Only halfway through so far but this is a great interview.

Kantrovitz says they saved about $80-$100k for Day 3 picks which implies Triantos will sign for about $800k over slot.

Yes, terrific interview. Really helpful to hear his account of the draft.

The conclusion that Kantro was only targeting to carry $100K over for one 3rd day overslot guy is interesting. And basically allows for allocating $2M for Triantos.

It is kinda weird that he thought carrying one single $80-100K bullet into Day 3 would put him in position to get a guy he evaluated as a 3rd-round guy. Thinking one $200K offer could get some HS guy who Kantro scouted as being a 3rd-round or even 2nd-round level talent.

He says that's "coming to fruition right now". Will be interesting to see who gets the $200K bullet.

I’d expect signings shortly (as early as tomorrow from AZ). And the $200k player and another $125k HS should be signing this week. I hope that doesn’t come off too douchey; it’s just all I can say right now.

Edit: “And”

Thanks, Greg, that's cool. Again, that was such an excellent interview, I appreciate how you let him go so he could take as long to explain things as he wanted.

One curiosity to me was that he referred to "bonus pool" a couple of times, and at least once referenced "less than 7 million". He never really alluded to the 5% overage. I assume within the scouting world, that they probably don't differentiate between the formal bonus pool and the "bonus-pool-plus-5%", since the latter is actually the spendable; so presumably they just use bonus pool to refer to the latter? Still, when he did refer to the pool, the specified less than $7M, which is true of the literal bonus pool, but is NOT true of the "bonus-pool-plus-5%".

Scouting-wise, I thought it interesting

1. that they seemed to be targeting Triantos all alone

2. The reference to Gray as a "deluxe" athlete.

3. How adamant he was about the quality of Wicks' slider and his ability to spin the ball.

4. The passing reference to maybe adding a 4th pitch to Wicks' repertoire.

So that pretty much should wrap it up, eh? Rodriquez and Olivo slot, Hambric the extra bullet.

heh heh, it would still be fun if Avitia would sign; slot plus college tuition is still a pretty good package, and being in the Cubs system with his brother might be fun.

In that vein, I wonder if they have a chance with Cunningham since he's committed to the University of Chicago.
