If Fleury reports, the Hawks are down to like $500k before agreeing to contracts with any of the restricted free agents. Goodbye Zadorov (which, awesome), probably DeHaan, Subban, Delia, etc. For one year, maybe of MAF. What are we even doing here.

From my understanding, there is room during the offseason to make moves that put you over the cap You have to be under it once the season starts, but then the LTIR comes into play. Seabrook and Shaw immediately go into LTIR which allows for their salaries to no longer count against the cap, freeing up something like $11 mil.

But free agency starts tomorrow morning. Do we know if he's even going to show up? Wouldn't it be nice to know if we have an extra $7m to spend or not? Do they really think they were Jones (minus Keith, minus Boqvist) and a goalie away from contending?

I'm just talking about cap space. I have no idea what Bowman is trying to do.

I feel like the Hawks must think Toews is going to rebound into something similar to his prime yrs. Short of that I am puzzled by their direction

I think they're looking to go down in a blaze of glory. One more season of trying. And then we might see a house cleaning of the front office as an excuse to erase the dirty parts of the past and move forward with fresh eyes.

They're 100% just making splashes so people ignore the sexual assault stuff.

There goes that LTIR money.

but they got actual cap space for it. isn't that better? the ltir stuff is very confusing to me. the problem would be that it had to be used on tyler johnson and a not-great contract.

His cap hit is ~1.8m less than Seabrooks but his is actually real while Seabrooks doesn’t count. They made their cap situation worse.

How long is Johnson's contract?

3 more years, same as Seabrook. So unless he preretires as well they’ve just given away usable net cap space to a little old guy.

Cap room isn't nothing to be fair. The money could have been used on non-declining players.

you aren't wrong, but i have to point out that one of those declining players just won the vezina 1 month ago. the direction of the organization is dumb, but the MAF trade is good.

He’s old and was available for free.

Yeah, but the LTIR stuff is only semi-usable. Getting rid of Seabrook's semi-dead space on the cap for a second rounder and Johnson is much better than the deal to get rid of Hossa's.

You just hope that Johnson has a decent enough season you can flip him next year when the real cap crunch for the Hawks is looming.

but they wouldn't have gotten the cap space if not for this particular trade anyways. did the ltir benefits outweigh that? it feels like we traded an abomination of cap hit for a meh cap hit that will actually provide value to the team, while getting a second.

When was the last time the Blackhawks acquired a veteran skater who performed? They got a little 30 year old. 30 is done in this league for non physical freaks. They can find 23 year old euro but I have no faith in them getting something out of somebody else’s cap albatross contract.
