Total steal in my opinion. There was literally zero reason for the Padres to NOT do this.

Simply disgusting the Cubs couldn’t do the same for some of our stars bc PTR is so broke.

I mean, there's ALWAYS the risk that Tatis "Mike Hampton"s himself and is out of the game in two years, but yeah, I'm all for saying "horsefeathers it" to all the arbitration years and just locking up your obvious superstar

But at what cost to your overall budget? I’m conflicted now.

My uncle ran into Mike Hampton at an airport and said “aren’t you Mike Hampton?”. Mike replied “no” and walked away. I’m convinced to this day that what my uncle saw was Mike clearly ashamed of his contract and didn’t want anyone to recognize him or his contract.

Let’s all hope this doesn’t happen to Fernando.

I think it would be more of a “Oscar Tavares’s” himself to be out of the league in two years.

Why? He signed a mega-deal, blew out his arm, and never played again. He's a pretty good example of the risk of signing someone to a long term deal (though he is a pitcher, and screw pitchers)

uh well first mike hampton pitched 5 seasons after signing that contract before blowing out his arm and missing two years from 33-34, he is a pitcher, and he signed that contract 21 years ago so even if he were a good comp i would think you'd pick someone more recent lol

Maybe there's not a good comp, then. How old was Prince Fielder when he signed his deal?

You do know Tatis is 21/22 and not some near 30 year old signing this extension, right?

I mean there’s obviously a risk, maybe he blows out a knee or breaks an ankle and has to move to LF or 2B or plateaus like some of our guys from great to just good and isn’t worth the money. But trying to liken the downside risk with an example of a 30+ year old pitcher or almost 30 year old in bad shape first baseman is like not even in the same universe of where Tatis is now.

i don't think there is a great example of one of these early arb buy out contracts turning out disastrously yet (i could totally be missing someone obvious)

which is a good representation of why they are usually shitty for the player and great for the team, not that i don't get why players opt to do it.

there's always the risk tatis turns out to be thor 2 the dark world, but from the team's perspective he might be thor: ragnarok

It's hard to compare this to any other deal because it's a fairly recent phenomenon that guys get real money in these deals. Up until a few years ago they were all like the Rizzo deal: 5ish years at tiny salaries and then 2-3 team options at decent money.

The union has learned how much of a joke those were, so now you have to lock guys up with less than a year of service time, or wait untilt they're close to FA and pay nearly market rates. This is a total unicorn, which is awesome to see. Given inflation and everything Tatis probably would have gotten close to $500M if he'd stayed awesome until free agency. But we're four years from when the Padres actually had to commit money to him, which is a LONG time.

If the Tatis and Machado deals don't blow up though, the Padres are going to be really good for a while.
