the schedule over the next month is pretty crazy. 9 of their next 11 are against TB (14-4-1) and FLA (13-4-3). having said that, florida's goal differential is only 3 better than the hawks'.

columbus is falling off hard, and dallas has like a million games to make up. i think the hawks are maybe the favorite for that last spot, or will be if they can navigate this next stretch without completely falling apart.

Yes, Columbus is currently a horsefeathers show. I wonder if they'll pull the plug on Torts. He has stayed loyal to his assistant coaches for years, even though their special teams have been bad for several seasons.

Any word on Toews?

Not a whisper.

They lost with literally less than a tenth left in OT to the Lightning but looked perfectly competitive with them all game. I'll take that point.

That was brutal. I thought there was no way they had enough time left to score in those final seconds.

I wasn't completely aware of this, but apparently Patrick Kane is about to jump into the top 5 for career points by an American born player:

1. Mike Modano - 1374

2. Phil Housley - 1232

3. Jeremy Roenick - 1216

4. Keith Tkachuk - 1065

5. Joe Mullen - 1063

6. Patrick Kane - 1057

There was an article in the Athletic the other day about this. If Kane plays to 40 like he may well be able to do, he very well could end up #1

Seabrook will live the next few years on the LTIRetirement Island where he's still rostered but doesn't count against the cap during the season. It's not exactly the same as the contract disappearing, but it's as close as you're gonna get and definitely helps.

So what, they have a cap hold in the offseason that disappear once play starts?

Yep - identical to the Hossa situation.

I don't remember what that situation meant either.

I'm a big NFL cap nerd, used to be a big NBA nerd and know enough still. Basically lost with the NHL.

I guess, what's the practical usefulness? Mid-season trade room, but not FA cap room?

Essentially. I'm no expert on these things, but that's the essence of it.

You can use it year round, but then your roster is frozen for the year. Really frozen - you can't even bring up players due to injuries, you just have to play shorthanded.

Unless they changed it in the last few years when I stopped paying attention, you can exceed the cap by 10% in the offseason with no penalty, so as long as you don't have a bunch of LTIR guys, you can use the overage to cover for them in the offseason and still sign guys as if they weren't there.

Really really need to make up for the bad loss to Dallas tonight

Nah, you have a playoff spot locked up. The bottom half of the Central is non-competitive
