Seems like a lot of work to hold on to a mediocre minor league pitcher because of, what, 3 starts?

I didn't realize that simply offering him a league minimum contract was hard work.

~60 career innings of mid 3s ERA and FIP, 10 k/9, 3 bb/9, baseball. idk if you’ve watched him at all lately but it’s hard not to like what you see when you watch and not at least think there’s a solid BOR starter/swing guy in there with maybe MOR upside. He’s only 27 and won’t cost any money, just gotta guarantee him a 25 man (or I suppose 26 next year) roster spot.

Then why look to move Chatwood? The Cubs aren't exactly swimming with pitching depth.

If you could save $4-7 million it makes sense to move him, especially if that money goes towards a 5th starter and Mills slots in the swing man role. I’d be fine keeping both I think and rolling the dice a bit on the 5th spot with them to start the year. Use the money on rounding out the roster elsewhere.

Dude's minor league numbers are a snooze the last 3 seasons. Doubt this is little more than tiny sample size based on the book not being out on him.

Man, I'm figuring Lester is a problem that needs to be fixed next season, too.

He is what he is, he’s gonna be a low-mid 4s FIP guy and hopefully gets in to some luck like last year and manages a 3 something ERA. Using Willy to get Jon Gray or Thor is my preferred route to address the open starter spot. Then sign Grandal.

Yeah so I'm fully convinced they should not trade Schwarber and pretty convinced Happ should be a Cub next year too. I don't see getting good value for either in a trade and really like how they came along

Also I just continue to not be impressed by Hoerner. I saw the pop drive single to RF, decent piece of hitting as far as seeing the pitch and going with it, and am really disappointed by how unimpressive his power is after all the hype. His nickname should be Pennywise because all his contact floats. Seems kinda small too. He and Contreras, by a whole lot, are the two bats in the org I'd be most willing to trade this offseason as this season winds down

I mean he’s already got more big league homers than minor league homers in a short stint.

You have to almost applaud the way the Cubs completely gave up. I mean none of this matters anymore and they aren’t playing their best players but you’d think there was some level of pride to not want to finish the season losing 12 in a row including 7 to your arch rivals.

(I know it’s only the 4th)

Who of their best (assuming health) are they not playing?

I’m genuinely asking because my uncle from Milwaukee is complaining and I looked at the lineup and said “they suck but that’s the best (aside Heyward who pretty much sucks)”

Was the wife beater playing? #BEST25

Hoerner has 5 XBH in 18 games played (his power is fine and he’ll have an offseason to get stronger and get over the wrist thing entirely), he brings something this team lacks with low Ks (13%) and high contact (83% contact rate). The offense needs to be diversified a bit over the offseason and Hoerner helps with that. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he’s a 4+ win 2B next year the contact/hit tool is elite and I expect him to be plus to elite defensively there. I agree on Schwarbs and Happ. Willy is the guy to move in a trade (or just move to the OF full time).

Really hope it's the injuries that sapped his strength because his statcast data is very Almora-ish. And he needs to be more selective at the plate, which is to be expected, but concerning nonetheless. That elite hit tool could be diminished by putting a lot of balls in play that should have been left alone.

Yeah he needs to show growth for sure, but he’s also actually fast so the GB profile could play up a little vs slowass Almora. He’s also going to be a plus defender at a position when Almora clearly isn’t. He’s going to have more value, even if it’s not a star he’s going to be a positive win value guy.

Yeah Hoerner is a shrimp, needs to hit the weight room. I've been mildly curious whether he could make a conversion to CF? Seems 2b is easy to find in comparison to CF. Just a thought.

He should get a look in CF, I agree. Since it’s such a huge hole for us.

He spent some time there in the minors this year

If they're going to give Happ more of a shot, isn't he likely to be the one that ends up in CF? Who would be less destructive between him and Nico at CF or 2B?
