You guys are overthinking it. The Yankees were going to non-tender him, so the Cubs got him for probably nothing to have a crack at re-signing him to a minor league contract.

Well yeah. The whole sequence of transactions with him was odd. It made a ton of sense to get him for the Mike Freeman AAA SS role

At some point, I'd love to hear the reasoning behind this series of moves. It's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but it's so bizarre. And he's a cheap middle infielder that would've made sense to stash at Iowa.

Almost have to think they thought they had a Russell trade worked out that fell through or maybe thought they were/are close to a FA signing/trade for a MIF?
