Go get horsefeathers, Joe.

For having Bote stray to far off the base, or for not bringing Rizzo in against a lefty reliever?

Quintana has maintained a steady 1.4+ WHIP all year to go along with the following monthly FIP/xFIP #'s:

4.25/4.33

4.66/4.33

4.72/4.26

5.21/5.31(!!!!)

I do not get the idea that he's been decent since May, or solid all year. He's been decidedly mediocre all season. Yeah, his ONE start so far in August was good, but come on.

Yeah, I'm not arguing he's been good or anything. Whatever word you want to use. I said decent. You said mediocre. We can go with that. I think he's good enough to give us 5 innings and keep us in a game in October. (And I think he can get better, since he's been better his whole career.)

Mainly, he hasn't been hit as hard since around mid-May and the results (ERA) have been better. His exit velocity numbers and batted ball data looked really bad at the start of the year. Since then, it's mostly been the walks, which have stayed around all year. Not forgiving the walks, because they are bad, but he can survive with our defense if he isn't getting hit hard.

It’s just crazy that what you described above is the starter we feel best about right now on a team with the best record in the NL

Not me. Kyle is our ace and always will be. And he's going to pitch like an ace the rest of the year. Q is just a guy right now until he proves he's more. I'm hoping Darvish comes back and can give us a another solid option at the top. But, I've got all the faith in the world in Hendricks.

Hendricks is who we should feel best about, imo.

We feel the best about Quintana right now? Seriously? I still trust Hendricks more in a big playoff game and if Hamels shows the same stuff he did in the first game I'd prefer him over Quintana as well. Still too early to say Hamels over Quintana definitively.

I may be having a little fun going over the top with the doom boner I haven’t been able to break out in years, but the denialism about how bad the starting pitching is gets to be pretty hilarious.

It is and has been bad but Hendricks has looked really like his old self for quite a few starts now so idk what to tell you about there but he looks encouraging, Q is solid and has been mostly solid all year and Darvish seems well on his way back, Lester was due for major regression and hopefully that get sorted out soon and he turns it back around and Hamels is doing enough interesting things outside of that stupid park in Texas to think he’s going to be good.

It’s the flailing cherry picking that gets me. Use “looks” for one guy, not-terrible ERA for another, appeal to regression for a third, and the vague “interesting things” for the fourth.

You’re not evaluating them, you’re looking for reasons to forgive them.

Whatever, just keep doom bonnering and not enjoying the best run of Cubs baseball we’ll ever see in our lives. My point was is that all these guys who are eternally doomed have things going on that, that might not be the case and we are still getting by with sub optimal performances from them.

John Grey still in the game in the 8th struck out Cain, Yelich and Thames. Hopefully they don’t bring in Wade.

Also, and I can't stress this enough, the rest of the Cubs are really good! We have the best offense in the NL, the best base running in the NL, the second-lowest bullpen ERA in the NL, quite possibly the best defense thanks to Galaxy Brain Stearns.

There's a reason we are good and have the best record, the best RD, and the best BaseRuns in the NL. Quit worrying so much about the damn rotation.

Either Jon Gray goes into the 9th with 99 pitches, or we're primed for another Wade Davis huge embarrassingly failure

If they don’t let him finish hopefully it’s Ottavino
