Is it asking too much for Heyward to catch that? I know balls that come off the wall at Wrigley don't usually get caught, but I figured if anyone could, it's the consensus best right fielder in his third year in the park.

I’m guessing he didn’t want to run full speed in to a brick wall

And it wasn't some lazy fly ball. It was hit at 102mph it wasn't a given he would've even gotten a glove on it while also going face first into said brick wall.

Yeah I might have missed/ignored the speed of the ball. Just saw it land at the base and was wondering if he could have gotten it without much threat of bodily harm.

Chatwood and Contreras are just a wretched battery.

It’s worth pointing out that Contreras is 63rd out of 66 catchers in framing this year per BP after finishing 97 out of 110 last year. I’m not an expert at interpreting this data but it seems he’s not bad at framing, he’s awful

If the strategy tonight is to long con the Cardinals in to thinking Wainwright is still good so they give him 25-30 starts this year, the offense is doing a bang up job. Sternsian level 4D chess thinking.

Seems like Wainwright would’ve been a good matchup to get Almora in there tonight vs a RHP. I mean just about anyone is better than Happ but the profile of RHP Almora seems to struggle with is not what’s Wainwright is.

I really don't get the Happ at leadoff thing. He's not even a great fit there if he wasn't all fucked up. He's a slugger that strikes out a lot. Stick his ass back there with Schwarber and let them swing for the fences.

We will never know, but I'm curious what Happ's value was in the off-season and whether he could have netted a young back of rotation starter or high upside reliever. I really felt he was the guy who should have been traded to clear the outfield logjam. Right now, he shouldn't be playing over Almora.
