I expect no more called strikes the rest of the game since that pitch was literally down the middle. I'm not sure I've ever seen one like that missed.

Lackey will never keep his cool on something that bad though. That's just an unreasonable expectation to have of him.

Agreed. But then it rubbed off on Willy in this case, and that loss in a tight game is especially bad.

That, and the "melting down" look isn't a great look ever.

Actually, just a few weeks ago or a month at the latest, the same thing happened where it was a strike and the dude started walking back, but it wasn't called. Whoever was pitching for us simply got him out later in the at bat.

If there's anytime for melting down though it's probably after that pitch.

I've yet to see a replay showing Contreras doing anything resembling melting down until after he was already ejected.

Just getting ejected is a problem.

It is a big problem whose fault lies exclusively with the umpire. He handled that horrific call as best he could up until the quick hook on Contreras. Lackey was never going to shut up, toss him. But you make a call that egregious and influential you can't be that itchy on the trigger finger when Willy isn't even in his face.

Really disappointed in how we melted down right there.

I'm really disappointed the umpire didn't take the tongue lashing he deserved for making a huge mistake in a pivotal game this season. And compounding it with the embarrassing ejection of Contreras.

I respect that. I'm just more disappointed we couldn't get out the pitcher even after the mistake.

This has to be the first time I've ever been irate during a Lackey start and it wasn't because of Lackey.

A little bit of it has to be Lackey doesnt it? Not because he did something wrong, just because its Lackey.

I'm on tilt. I was already irritated by him being the starter but I have said some horsefeathers at my desk that is not acceptable in polite society.

I think I've sort of taken a real lax attitude towards anything this year, just from winning last year. It has been frustrating, but here we are in September and still in it.

Should Lackey have kept cool? I don't know. I guess he made his point after the first demonstration, but you knew something would go down after giving up the base hit. It's too bad bc he was pitching well, but he's "Big John" so I guess his DNA made him do it.

Did Willson get tossed for nothing, then go crazy? That sucks. Hopefully the suspension is small.

In a big situation, Joe used it to call upon a guy who's pitched pretty poopy. If you get really horsefeathering drunk and squint hard enough at it, it was a leader showing confidence in a guy in a last ditch effort to save his ass before having to set a playoff roster. I guess it could also be interpreted as blowing the game and really hurting our chances to make the playoffs, but hey, he got the K!

It's in the past now, it's an opportunity now to get a W and pick up those guys. Only down 2-1. If we win, would be a nice boost for the rest of the series too, showing that fire. (I know, it isn't really fire, it's more "losing cool" but let's just word it differently!)
