The Cubs have a bunch of games the rest of this month against teams below .500 and find themselves in a position to take control of the division. They can do it.

If they don't, they don't. It's not our faults.

Why do I feel less hopeful about making the playoffs now than when we were 5.5 games behind Milwaukee? We were tied with St Louis then as well

I don't know. You're really freaking out. Despite the Cubs making everyone miserable, the Cardinals have been no better -- even after winning 35 games in a row. They aren't a team to quake in your boots over. It's going to be a close race. But I don't know why you are freaking out now.

Not freaking out. just frustrated at watching this team which makes me say things. So annoyed that they've followed up their only really great stretch of the year with another really poor one.

Sorry. I've just seen you posting a lot about our lead and how the Cardinals are doing and you weren't going all Bryant's Disco Ball about the Brewers. Which... there is more reason to do that now, since it's mid-August. It's definitely scoreboard watching time. And that's why the whole freak out about the vaunted Brewers in June was silly -- because it was June. So there is more urgency now. And the Cards are a serious threat.

Still, our fortunes haven't change much. We've been somewhere between probably 75-90% likely to make the playoffs pretty much all year. We still are. The minor fluctuations here and there probably seem more dramatic than they really are. Sure, it's not a good thing to drop a couple games and go from 90% to 75%, but, it's not exactly dire.

They are frustrating, though. That's for sure.

Look at it this way, Kyle. Tonight's only the second worst thing that's happened to you in that ballpark.

I don't want to speak for anyone else, but it might be that some of these people despise the Cardinals and it's putting them in a bad mood and making them freak out.

That's how I feel about the vaunted Brewers, where most people have the Cards No. 1 on their list.

Poor Duke. His heart is going to break twice as hard as everyone else's.

Probably. But I don't think I'm delusional about them or anything. I know they're not that good and that they could easily lose the division. I've come to terms with that already.

But I'm not ready to throw in the towel on these losers yet, so it definitely will sting if it happens.

Yeah, being in a race with the Cards is way more frustrating than being in one with the Brewers. It definitely feels a lot more significant now.

I mean, we are in a race with three teams. They all suck, but we might too.

Look, it's not every day you face a talent as impressive as Patrick Corbin; no shame in getting shut out by a stud like that. TIP YOUR CAPS, FELLAS.

I'm going with the mantra I came up with for Wilson: "they're bums until they're not."

Just wait until the Pirates sneak into the equation, too.

I think it's probably going to come down to the Cubs and Cards. Those head-to-head games are going to be huge. I've been saying they all suck, but I think the Cards are clearly better than the other two. The Pirates' offense is secretly horrible and their pitching isn't anything to write home about. And the Brewers might be even worse.

Not that there's a huge difference, since there's only, what, 6 weeks left? They'll all probably hang around within 5 of the lead for most of the rest of the season. But I think the Pirates and Brewers probably both finish under .500. And one of the Cubs or Cards will win over 85 and be the tallest midget.
