Welp, this might be a good year to raid the trash heap and waiver wires for cheap options to try to catch lightning in a bottle and hope to eek our way into the playoffs. Unless something changes soon, I'm not sure it is worth dealing any significant prospects. Try to piece something together for the rest of the year and then make some larger moves to regroup in the offseason.

i'll never understand this. the sports media says stuff like this too.

if you think the cubs are worse than you thought coming into this season, that's all the more reason to get more help, fix obvious holes, and win a very winnable division.

I'm just sayin', one of you or Duke is going to have to drown to let the other one float to safety on that piece of wood.

It's about not expending your somewhat limited resources on a borderline playoff contender. I get it that anything can happen in the playoffs and the goal is generally just to get to the playoffs and hope for the best, but there are only so many prospect "bullets" that can be used before the farm system has been depleted. I would prefer to spend those when they can take a team from good to great, rather than from average to slightly above average. This year's team just feels like it is more than 1 good starting pitcher away from being a World Series contender.

when you need to cement a playoff berth it makes a lot more sense to go all in than when you are locked into one. this makes no sense. this is a much higher leverage spot in which to use said bullets.

and how many times do we need to see 87 win wild cards and crap division winners win world series to realize that there is no such thing as a team built to win a world series (beyond obviously being built to win a division)

the fact that the most dominant team in baseball also managed to win the world series last year doesn't nullify that. that same team was in serious peril multiple times in last year's run.

if they were 10 games up and were talking about trading jimenez and cease for a starter, i'd be much more annoyed.

not to mention that if they really pony up, it is almost certainly for an acquisition that'll be a key contributor beyond this season.

This is the stuff of legend. This is the stuff that makes your last name both an adjective and a v DB:

Let Javy pitch

I really want to see how fast Willy can throw it off a mound. Maybe he will throw 110 MPH and we can turn him into a part time pitcher.

If you are the 1998 Cubs, sure, but the strategy can be a bit more conservative with a team that is built to be competitive for several years. Missing the playoffs for a year would suck, but it isn't the end of the world.

I'm still not seeing the logic in being more willing to expend resources to improve when the team is more locked into a playoff spot.

and, again, there is no way they'd give up the real assets for a half season rental this year. if they trade for a starter, that guy is needed going forward and will be contributing to those several years you're talking about.
