Sure would be nice if Kellogg could avoid a HR or five today. Maybe just start pitching better in general, all hands on deck for the approaching trade season and all.

He may want to avoid the whole, "pitch to contact" thing

Do scouts even go to watch Kellogg pitch? I'm truly asking.

No. If he's on the mound, then cool. But, they're looking at other guys for the most part. Might as well take a few notes. But, he's not even a top 30 prospect in a middling system. If there was ANY buzz whatsoever on him, BA, BP, FG, or Law would have actually ranked him. Sickels, has him inside his list, but hes a stats guy and had actually pegged him to break out. He didnt, not a shock. No ones clamoring to get him into their system. He can be a Rashad Crawford type of 4th piece in a deal, as can 15-20 other guys we've got in that 25-45ish area of our system.

Meh:

Arizona Phil"]This was Erling Moreno's first game action since appearing in one game (three innings) for South Bend on April 10th. It now appears that Moreno is being primed to be a starting pitcher at Eugene (joining Albertos, Camargo, Assad, and de los Rios), rather than making a return trip to South Bend.

Erling Moreno: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 3/0 GO/AO, 31 pitches (16 strikes)

RHP Bailey Clark (Cubs 2016 5tth round draft pick) threw "live" BP (one inning - 25 pitches) on Field #6 prior to the intrasquad game. Clark did not attend post-2016 AZ instructs amd he was a late arrival at Minor League Camp this season because he was continuing his undergraduate work at Duke during the 2016-17 off-season.

That's disappointing. I wonder if he got hurt or if his one outing was enough to show he wasn't ready for full season ball? At any rate, i 'm glad he's pitching, but was hoping for more.

Hopefully Clark can build on his end of the year and get to SB quick.

He was placed on the DL so he definitely was hurt.

Arizona Phil"]I asked around last week about Moreno and all I know is that he was shut-down for a month and then he started throwing bullpens. I didn't see him in the morning Rehab Throwing Program Group, so I don't know what exactly was wrong with him.

I don't believe that Moreno will necessarily remain at Eugene for the entire season. There will probably be injuries (as happened with Cease) or promotions in the near future that could open up a slot for him at South Bend, but for right now it appears that he will likely be in the Eugene starting rotation when the NWL begins play next month.

At least Crawford had some athleticism and upside, though.

On the flip side, Kellogg is a lefty. Gun to my head, and despite the inherent risk of pitchers, I think Kellogg ends up with a longer big league career as a lefty reliever. Heck, I'd be impressed if Crawford makes it to the big leagues.

I think Kellogg is a guy that may wind up getting a few starts for a tanking team with a shitty major league roster in 3-4 years. I've brought up Jokisch as a likely career path for him. Fringe stuff that gets by in the minors, just no upside at all. Jokisch didn't get a ML callup though(I don't think anyway?)despite putting up solid numbers at each stop in the minors. I figure Kellogg has a shot to make it there, but not with us. At any rate, he's far from interchangeable with guys like Clifton and De La Cruz, who are both top 50-75 pitching prospects in baseball.

Don't blame you for not remembering this but Jokisch racked up 14.1 big league innings in 2014.

Chris Rusin also comes to mind and he has carved up a career being a long man/spot starter for the Rockies.

I think a bit of the "pessimism" here is more just people like me that like giving a little hell to you about your (seemingly) overly and out-of-the-blue optimism. Hey, if Hendricks can turn out to be what he is then there's always upside.

Side note: I'll be watching MB again (hopefully a few times) here in about 3 weeks. I can't wait to see Eloy! I'll actually try to do a good job of "scouting" him (size, fielding, running etc.). Not that I'm a scout by any means but hopefully can report back how he "looks" in an overarching capacity.
