Oh and I went to Cubs @ Brewers in 2015 when Ross made his pitching debut. He had a shutout inning but was yelling at the defenders where to position themselves. Crappy teammate.

Oh and some Kris Bryant guy hit his 1st career home run.

8/8/88- Had SRO tickets for the first night game at Wrigley. Bill Murray walked right past us on his way to the booth to harass Steve Stone. First batter for the Phillies (Steve Henderson?) hit one on to Waveland avenue off of Suttcliffe and everyone said "Turn out the lights". Then it rained for 3 hours and they finally called the game.

At one point, Greg Maddux, Jamie Moyer, Jody Davis and Al Nipper did a slip and slide around the bases on the wet tarp. Don Zimmer was pissed and everybody but Maddux I think got traded in the off season.

Then some drunk girl in a tube top type dress ran onto the field and tried to slip and slide too. She never made it as far as the tarp though.

Double header against the Pirates in 2003. I thought we were going to win the World Series; was only off by 13 years :-/

Now that would have been a fun day.

It was my company's work outing, I just got bombed. It was really fun.

September 27, 2003

I sat in the bleachers with about 8 fraternity brothers for a double header with the Pirates.

The Cubs swept the dh and the stros lost clinching the division for the Cubs.

Wow, was I drunk that day

I was there when they clinched the division at home in 2008. Man, that was a fun celebration; felt like we hung out in the ballpark with the players all over the field forever. I wasn't nervous at all going to the playoffs; the team seemed totally loose and how quickly they got rolled still doesn't make any sense.

In no particular order, just a list from the top of my head:

World Series Game 4

World Series Game 5--I've never been more nervous

NLCS Game 6--OK, this is the best one. Just absolute joy and mayhem.

NLCS Game 1--MIGGY!

NLDS Game 1--JAVY!

NLDS Game 2

NLDS Clincher vs. the Cardinals--The Schwarber bomb was just unbelievable in person.

NLCS games in 2015, though we just got our ass handed to us in both

Opening Day 2017--Addison's HR was incredible

Opening Day 2008--Kosuke game-tying 3 run HR (they lost in extras, but that moment was awesome)

Cubs vs. Brewers 2001 when Wood threw a 1 hitter and Rondell White hit a HR

Mongo McMichael yelling at the umpire game in 2001

Mark Prior's 1st game in May (?) 2002

Cubs/Pirates division clinching DH in 2003. We had a previously scheduled open bar party at a local bar after that game. I have no idea how I did not end up in the hospital that night.

2008 Division clincher vs. the Cards

2007 Playoff game vs. D'Backs--it was like 90 degrees in October. The stadium was shaking when we loaded the bases, then DeRosa hit into a DP and everyone knew the series was over

Cubs/A's in 2004 when Todd Walker scored the winning run with a Superman slide crossing home plate

Cubs-Yankees 2003--Hee Seop Choi got hurt and Karros denied Clemens going for his 300th win. Mike Remlinger had an incredible fist-pump that game.

Opening Day 2004--everyone thought we were a shoo-in for the playoffs that year (Oops)

The first game after 9/11 in 2001 when Sosa hit a HR and carried the little American flag around the bases with him. Sammy is/was/will always be the man.

Our little league went to the last game at Wrigley before the strike in 1994. That was an odd feeling in the stadium as everyone knew what was coming.

One of the first games I went to as a kid in the 80s was an 18 or so-inning Cubs/Cards game. We were on a bus trip so we had no choice but to stay for the whole game because that was the trip's rule. I think that game took 5 years off of my parents' life dealing with 2 kids under the age of 8 for 5+ hours at a game.

Road:

Maddux's 300th win in SF in 2004. We had the trip planned before the season and that was the best timing luck ever. We also got to drink with some of the team at a bar later that night. After that, we knew the team was going nowhere, they were none too shy with voicing their displeasure with other "factions" of the team.

Cubs/Rays in Tampa in 2008--we lost on a walk-off squeeze

Cubs/Brewers in Milwaukee in 2010--only because we watched the Blackhawks/Preds unbelievable Game 5 in the Parking Lot

Cubs/Twins at Target Field in 2015--great extra-inning game and cool stadium

Cubs/Sox at the Cell in 2003 or 2004 when we blew a like 6 run lead with Wood on the mound. That sucked big time. My dad was super drunk and almost fought someone in the parking lot--not a good look on him.

Cubs/Sox at the Cell in 2001 when Carlos Lee hit a game winning HR (grand slam maybe?). It was on a Friday night and after that game, I think they stopped scheduling Cubs/Sox night games for a long time. I must have seen 50 fights in the upper deck. It was out of control. Just full of morons.

Cubs/Rockies in Coors Field in 2005. Not a super memorable game, but we had really good seats.

Cubs/Cards in the first year of the new Busch stadium. What an underwhelming experience that was. The new Busch Stadium is trash compared to most newer stadiums.

Cubs/Mariners in Safeco. My son's first road Cubs game. What a great stadium and city for that matter.

Cubs/Nats in the new Nats stadium. Went to a 3 game series and I think we lost every game. Booooooooo

Cubs/Marlins the first year of Marlins Stadium. It was like the 20th game ever in the stadium and we got seats like 20 rows behind the plate for $30. I have no idea how they got that stadium approved.

the sammy corked bat game in 2003, bleachers. two of us were underage and not drinking; the other two were drinking mai tais and being the worst. drunk friend 1 lightly smacked drunk 2 in jest; drunk 2 took it the wrong way and smacked drunk 1 so hard in the face that i can still hear the sound it made. the whole thing was very entertaining but also very embarrassing, so i went and sat somewhere else while they cooled off. the crowd was uneasy about sammy but everyone banded together to yell mean things at rocco baldelli. still my most memorable cubs game, and still the only incident of violence among that very tame group of friends. i'm pretty sure that bat broke the universe for a minute.

games 3 and 4 of the 2015 NLDS were also fun, but i was stressed out the whole time, and i'm honestly okay with losing every playoff lottery for the rest of my life.

One of the times I've seen the Cubs play the Nats in DC, my brother and I were sitting right above the LF corner and just mercilessly made fun of Ryan Church all night. We were basically the only people in the section, so it wasn't subtle at all. We were having a blast...until our mom yelled at us to "leave that nice Church man alone." THANKS A LOT, MOM; NOW RYAN CHURCH HAS THE UPPER HAND.

I've lived in Phoenix since 1991, moved out right after I graduated from SIU Carbondale, so it does limit my trips to Wrigley. However I see our boys in blue out west quite often either in Spring Training, Chase Field, Dodger Stadium, or Petco/Qualcomm. I've been fortunate enough to plan trips back to Chicago well in advance and gotten lucky to see the Cubs clinch twice at home in 08' and 16', although this year was a faux clinch because the Cardinals lost the night before.

9/20/08 @ Wrigley VS Cardinals- Cubs clinch the division against the Redbirds. I was sitting in the left field bleachers and still remember the players doing a lap around the stadium spraying champagne up into the stands. Still have a great picture of me and my friend in front of the marque that said "2008 Central Division Champs". Who knew only a few weeks later they would be swept by the Dodgers in ugly fashion. I always compared this moment and what happened later to getting married and having a great honeymoon, then you come home a few weeks later and you find your wife banging the neighbor in your bed.

9/18/08 @ Wrigley VS Brewers- Cubs were down by 3 with 2 outs and 2 on in the bottom of the ninth. Geovany Soto cranks a 3 Run HR into the left field bleachers only 20 feet away from where I was sitting to tie the game. Wrigley went nuts. Cubs won later in the 12th.

9/16/16 @ Wrigley VS Brewers- The Cubs had clinched the division the night before because the Cardinals lost on the west coast. Still it was fun because the players got to celebrate a walk off HR by Miggy. I do remember being a little disappointed the players didn't do a lap around the stadium like they did in 2008, but these guys had bigger fish to fry is what I told my friend at the time. The celebration was much less subdued than in 2008 probably because 2008 was an actual division clinching game, but you also felt 2016 it was just the first step so nothing to get overly excited about.

Some other random games out west...

7/28/98 @ Chase Field (formally know as Bank One Ballpark) VS Diamondbacks- Sammy Sosa hits his first career grand slam, Cubs win 6-2.

9/16/98 @ Qualcomm VS Padres- Sammy hits second career grand slam his 63rd of the year. Memorable because it was during the Sosa/Big Mac HR race and the fans were really into seeing Sammy at every plate appearance. They even set off fireworks when Sosa hit his 63rd, which the next day the stadium was criticized by many for catering to a road team even though 75% of the people there were rooting for the Cubs.

2007 post season games 1 and 2 @ Chase Field- Even though the Cubs didn't play well, it was the first time I'd ever seen the Cubs in person in the post season. Yes, I was at the game when Diamondback Chris Young hit the HR off of Ted Lilly and Lilly famously slammed his glove on the mound in frustration. Brutal two days.

10/04/08 @ Dodger Stadium Game 3 of the NLDS- The Cubs were already down two games to none in the series. The Dodgers scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first and cruised to a 3-1 win. I've never seen a team give up the way that team threw in the towel and could be the most disappointing game I've ever attended. Still it makes it memorable but for the wrong reasons.

Off topic sporting event: 10/16/2006 Chicago Bears @ Arizona Cardinals University of Phoenix Stadium- Yes, I was in attendance for the famous Monday Night Football game when the Bears staged an incredible comeback down by 20 and capped by the Devin Hester punt return in the 4th Quarter followed by Cardinal's head coach Dennis Green's famous post game tirade:

"The Bears are what we thought they were. They're what we thought they were. We played them in preseason—who the hell takes a third game of the preseason like it's [expletive]? [expletive]! We played them in the third game—everybody played three quarters—the Bears are who we thought they were! That's why we took the damn field. Now if you want to crown them, then crown their ass! But they are who we thought they were! And we let 'em off the hook!"

My one and only bleacher game at Wrigley was against the Marlins and while Brad Penny was shagging fly balls during batting practice he was taking horsefeathers from everyone. It was fun, though, because he would give it right back

I go so infrequently that I haven't seen many memorable moments from the Cubs. but my favorite memory from the stands was probably around 2010 in the shade behind home plate in April with the wind howling in. I couldn't feel my face or move my arms to drink my beer. but there was a guy near us who was easily in his early 60s with his mid-20s Peruvian house boy, I imagine, so I was mildly entertained. it hits like the 7th inning and suddenly old creeper outs himself as an Astros fan, but he didn't seem to know any of the players or anything about baseball really. Geoff Blum comes up, and he starts yelling "go Jeff". I casually and discreetly let him know this guy actually pronounces it like it's spelled, with a hard G. "it's Scandinavian" I told him. so the old dude is standing for a solid 5 minutes standing and clapping and screaming out "LET'S GO GEE-OFF!"

I like to imagine that he's talking to somebody somewhere about me. my only hope is that he speaks fondly

I found the box score!

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN201004180.shtml

that [expletive] Geoff tied the game off Charlie Marbles in the 9th

Start Time Weather: 44° F, Wind 10mph in from Centerfield, Sunny.

it was probably around 70 when we got downtown

Ah, that cold starting temperature reminds me that I was there for the 2008 Home Opener, too; got to see Kerry's debut as the closer (which sucked) and the debut of Fukudome (which ruled), who briefly fulfilled all of the lofty Ichiro meets Matsui hyperbole by going 3-3 with a walk and a game-tying dong in the 9th. It was as cold as you expect a March 21st game in Chicago to be, but it was horsefeathering damp and rainy and grey all day, so it was the kind of wet cold that just cuts to the bone. We all signed up for multiple junk mail accounts with the Bank of America reps around the park just to get the free blankets they were giving out.

It's weird... two years ago that was easily my favorite cubs team ever and I couldn't imagine it being surpassed. Even when the 2015 team started out well (and I didn't really doubt it would) I had this doubt, partly because I'm older I think, that it wouldn't be the same... like maybe the 08 playoffs after such a great season ruined me or something. Now I don't really care at all about that team.
