I wonder how low his price would have to go before the Cubs would think about bringing him back. I really wouldn't mind having him and Monty form some sort of a hybrid starter approach through at least the first half to keep the innings down for both of them. Assuming Hammel is his normal first half self, we could then profit by trading him off at the deadline and moving to a more traditional rotation for the second half.

I'm certain it won't happen, but I wouldn't terribly mind seeing it happen, either.

Is Hammel all that interested in coming back to the Cubs? Especially if it's at a discounted rate? He wasn't so happy with Joe as I recall.

is it really a price issue? how much better could they ask for than what they could have had him at with that option?

I would quite like bringing him back, assuming the injury issue at the end of the year is behind him (his elbow/forearm I think). It could have been the spin, but the reason for not picking up the option seemed liked it was a favor to him to get a payday. Which who knows if it's true, I think they thought they had a move for SP lined up and didn't need him/want to spend ~$10 mil on a 6th starter. Hammel and Tyson Ross signings would be a nice finish to the offseason.

I wonder if he could be talked into a late-Roger Clemens type of deal... Take the first half of the season off, sign a pro rated contract for the second half and playoffs.

We wanted to move on from him. It'd be a long shot to see him come back to us without a guaranteed rotation spot. He's just trying to get a second year right now, from what I can tell.

They clearly would rather have Montgomery starting instead of him, and Hammel's repertoire doesn't transfer to the bullpen well(and there's not really much space there anyway). It's hard to see Hammel being considered unless there was a fairly significant injury in the rotation while he was still available.
