Do you think the Bears wished they knew Maclin would be released before they signed 47 mediocre WRs?

I would hope so. But, I don't know if I can give them that much credit. I'd punt Cruz into the stratosphere for him though.

Yeah, I'm sure they'd love to have Maclin, but not going to happen at this point. Maclin is 29 (old-ish for a WR) and coming off a down/injury filled season. But he'd be the #1 or 2 in this offense. The only WRs that really matter at this point are Meredith and White....and that's on the off chance he's actually ever healthy. Not concerned about taking away playing time from Kendall Wright, Victor Cruz, Markus Wheaton, or Josh Bellamy. I'd sign Maclin today and cut Cruz tomorrow. He didn't get much guaranteed money and the Bears have tons of cap room, eating money is no big deal if you can upgrade the talent by that much.

I saw a list on the Ringer (yes I actually go there occasionally) that had the line 9th i think. It's kind of funny after we had those Lovie teams that were ultimately decent but had terrible offensive lines that we have a garbage team with a good line.

I used to think having strong offensive and defensive lines were the most important thing for a successful football team besides QB, but damn 4 of those 5 teams are in the range of mediocre to horrible overall.

The Bears had good lines with the good lovie teams, they were just patched together with 29 year old free agents and they ignored the line in the draft so it fell apart quickly.

I think a strong line can go a long way to help a less talented team stay competitive. You still need your skill guys to win you games, but the line can cover for some of your weaknesses.

Yup. Plus I'm not sure the adage about strong lines is inaccurate. The Bears had injury along both those lines, particularly D-Line, and solid line play can only do so much to overcome Hoyer/Barkley QB play for 72% of your snaps.

I have been saying this.

The Bears are a top-tier pass-protecting team. The trick is that you need someone who can pass.

The temptation to start Trubisky will be real, especially if he outperforms Glennon in camp.

12. Chicago Bears (7-9)

A lot of signs point to the Bears being a much better team in 2017 then 2016. In 2015 their best guard was Kyle Long, their best defensive lineman was Eddie Goldman, their best pass-rusher was Pernell McPhee, and their best cornerback was Kyle Fuller. All of them played fewer than 500 snaps in 2016 due to injury. They hit on 2016 draft picks halfback Jordan Howard (81.0), center Cody Whitehair (87.2), and linebacker Leonard Floyd (65.1). Both the offense and defense have a lot of pieces that haven’t played together before, but on paper this team is much better than their 3-13 record last year indicates.
