Both MLB Network and ESPN2 just had Harper segments and the Cubs weren't mentioned once. Charles the cat must be hanging out in different, totally real Las Vegas lobbies than the national writers.

Flipping back and forth I haven’t heard the Cubs mentioned once at all.

The next rumor he gets right will be his first. Is everyone excited for Greg Maddux pitching coach though?

I'm really enjoying how much all this attention he's getting is getting under your skin

Bruce Levine wrote that there are rumblings that the Ricketts have approved a high price FA expenditure.

I've always wondered how much a guy like Bryce Harper brings to a team in terms of additional revenue and how they go about trying to factor that in.

at least $200 because i would buy a jersey day one and get my kids shirtseys to replace the Kris Bryant ones I burned last year

I’m sure it’s all in Boras’s 1,000 page handbook. But yeah he has to bring in a good amount of ancillary revenue, like he’s one of the ~5 MLB players that’s actually known nationally to even not that big of baseball fans. He has national commercials with at least T-Mobile (I think?) few MLB guys have that and he definitely brings in more value/revenue than the typical player. Having him on the team probably helps the TV deal valuation as well.

Not a ton beyond the benefits of winning. Most revenue from merch and other stuff like that goes into one big league-wide pot. Because the Cubs are actively negotiating a tv deal and Bryce is the only baseball player with a decent Q Score this situation might be an exception though.

There’s a non-zero chance that Theo is being so secretive this offseason that even Jed doesn’t know what’s going on

Yeah there’s a pretty good chance Jed’s only in Vegas to make Jager/booze, Starbucks and food runs for Theo. Maybe he gets to double check some numbers but isn’t told what players/transaction they’re tied to. Oh he also is probably in charge or making sure the bread eater doesn’t die and has to replenish the bread supply every hour.

The new Athletic Cubs podcast from Dec 7 was a depressing listen. Bruce Levine is like the only baseball writer giving the Cubs any shot at this. DiCaro and Bernstein are reputable, but Bryce signing here would really shock a whole bunch of people.

I think the single piece of information I'm still most optimistic about was that Bernstein segment last month talking about the Cubs, at that point, not being scared away by the price tag yet. This was after the collective wet blanket that is the Athletic having doubts. It was pretty matter-of-fact and as much as he annoys me on radio, he wouldn't say what he said without there being truth to it. Maybe. Hopefully.

I really don’t think the Cubs Athletic guys have any idea what’s going on and don’t really have a history of having real sources or breaking much even Rosenthal at their own company isn’t as down on the Cubs as them. Bernstein (Morrow), Dicaro (Heyward And Tanaka) at least have a history of breaking/being first to report stuff under Theo. Levine I don’t think has been reporting this spending limitations stuff as hard as the Atheltic guys have been either all offseason.

Man, horsefeathers the Ricketts if this doesn't happen. These horsefeathering awful billionaires are a loathsome necessary evil in pro sports to begin with; their one "job" should be to spend what it takes to win, especially when someone like this rolls around. It's not like they'd be pissing money away; they'd just be making less of it. horsefeathers them, and horsefeathers their dumb ass hotels and horsefeathers and whatever the horsefeathers else fucked this up and made their pickled little dicks shrivel up even more at thought of being slightly less hideously wealthy if they signed Harper or Machado.
