Connecting the dots from the things I've read, I think the Dodgers will have Urias ready to go tomorrow as a piggyback to Hill, in case he can't get out of the 4th again. Obviously, they'd reasonably prefer for Hill to give them 6, but realistically he may only give them 4. I think they'd then try to go 3 with Urias and then turn it over to the pen. That would mean a bullpen game in Game 4, with I assume Stripling getting the start, hoping to get 3+ out of him. LA really can't afford to have Hill, Urias, and Maeda all pitch 3 1/3 on consecutive days, so the best approach for them is to piggy back 2 of them when they can to save the bullpen, have a bullpen heavy game in the other, and then hope to use the Kershaw start in Game 5 (who are we kidding, he's pitching it) to give most of the bullpen rest. Maeda could be on extra rest in Game 6 and then Hill on regular rest, Game 7 with Kershaw available out of the pen.

Why wouldn't they just use Stripling in relief of Hill and then start Urias in Game 4 and only expect a couple innings out of him? That way you have the hope of getting more SP innings in Game 4, and Stripling gets the benefit of a lineup oriented for a LHP. In the Cubs' case the latter doesn't make much difference(especially with Montero starting), but still.

They're doomed either way as the dong fest commences appx 24 hours from now and extends another 48 hours after that.

Why are we expecting a short outing for from Urias? I know he's never thrown over 100 pitches, but wasn't he really good in the 2nd half?

It's more that the Dodgers are terrified to let him pitch because they've been treating him as bubble boy the pitcher. He threw 6 strong innings against the Cubs on August 27th, and he's thrown 16 innings since.

You (as the Dodgers) know someone other than Kershaw is going to have to start 4 of the final 5 games. You also know that your starters have averaged 3.1 innings per start. Knowing that, you can reasonably expect 4.2 bullpen innings per day. You use Stripling tomorrow for 3 innings, you can't use him Wednesday. You use him for 3 innings Wednesday, it doesn't matter as much because you don't expect to need him at all Thursday (and if you do need him, you most likely are going to lose the game anyway). Same logic goes for having to use guys like Baez, Blanton, Dayton and Avilan for back-to-back days.

Of course, Urias was just named Game 4 starter so all this may be moot.

how many pitchers do we plan on letting hit

presumably for an occasion just like this?

So the Dodgers are being really cautious with Urias. I get that. But let me ask a question. Aren't the Dodgers being a little haphazard with Kershaw? I mean, I get it. Getting to the WS is a big deal. And you never know when the next opportunity presents itself (see the Cubs). But they have a ton of dough invested in this guy over the long term. And he had a pretty significant back injury just two months ago. Isn't it pretty darn irresponsible to keep running this guy out there on short rest...assuming he pitches Game 5 (if they're down 3-1) or even another game 6 followed by relief work the following day????

I know lineup order doesn't matter that much but I've just never liked Zobrist batting 4th. How about Fowler, Zobrist, Bryant, Rizzo, Baez, Soler, Russell, Montero. The way Baez is hitting right now he should give Rizzo better protection than Russell, especially against a lefty. If you are on "Team Heyward" then put him where Soler is.

And yes I know giving your best hitters less ABs by hitting them lower is illogical but sometimes I can't help but being illogical.

Well they let both Kershaw and Hill start on 3 days rest instead of letting him even start a game in the LDS. I imagine it's more of a 'he's at 125 innings and he's never thrown 90 before' thing rather than a 'let's save all the bullets to use at once'.

Eh, I'm with you on this, though I think it's mainly just frustration on my part at how relatively disappointing this team turned out to be dong-wise. Zobrist is obviously a very useful hitter to have, but the meatball in me wants a gigantic dong machine batting cleanup. I'd probably feel differently if Schwarber was playing and would be cool with it with another consistent dong-threat coming after Zobrist, but you either have streaky Russell, disappointing Soler and Heyward, or Contreras starting every 3rd game. Right now Baez feels like that threat, and I'd love to see him consistently hitting 4th or 5th.
