If it's a legit possibility now, it should have been equally as legit of a possibility on Saturday night. His numbers are certainly Cy Young worthy, but I don't think he's the runaway favorite. He might end up getting votes because of the tragedy but he shouldn't.

My ballot right now is something like

1. Scherzer

2. Hendricks

3. Fernandez

4. Kershaw

5. Lester

Why not? With no clear cut favorite, and a perfectly respectable resume on his own, what harm is there if a few votes that were considering going another way swing into his favor?

especially if they were going to go against him for something stupid like where his team is in the standings

Well yeah I would agree with that if they were otherwise going to use bad logic to vote, but the Cy Young is awarded to best pitcher. If he wasn't your best pitcher last week then he's not your best pitcher now because he died tragically. If you want to use it as a tiebreaker then fine.

Scherzer is right behind him, but he has pitched 40+ innings more than Fernandez, which is both a detriment to Scherzer (with regards to WAR) and a point in his favor. Taking a look at the numbers Fernandez does compare favorably in many categories so maybe I am changing my opinion.

That said the way the OP was framed ("Been hearing that this is a legit possibility now, if not likelihood.") made it seem like CubsBearsMagic was asking if he now should win the Cy Young because of his tragic passing. If he wins, it will be on merit, or at least it should.

I mean, it was a possibility before. But I don't think there's any denying that his passing has increased his odds of winning it, right or wrong.

he led MLB in xFIP & SIERA, and despite poor BABIP possessed well above-average (low) hard-contact rate, so there's a really valid argument for it

this just really horsefeathering sucks

Scherzer is a big fat load and Kershaw will probably win a billion more. I guess I can understand Cubs fans voting no because they want Hendricks, but horsefeathers that; I have a soul.

That and Fernandez>>>>Hendricks (and I love the professor).

Agree with order, exactly. But I say F it, give it to Fernandez. He should get it because of the tragedy. It would be a nice gesture for what from all accounts was a really fun guy and good teammate, who would have probably won a couple in his career anyway.

Why does it seem like there's so little Syndergaard talk anyway?

I just think he hasn't thrown enough innings. Pretty much the only reason Hendricks has a Cy Young case is because he's leading baseball in ERA by over a half a run, fairly or not. If you group Noah with the power pitchers he hasn't thrown enough innings compared to someone like Scherzer. He should be in more conversations though.
