My Field Hockey coaching career came to an end with an undefeated season and our 3rd championship in 4 years. The other season we won the regular season title but lost the playoff game. Our best player was nominated for player of the year but lost out to the best player on the team that we beat 3 times including the championship game. The conference coaches voted. Maryland just announced the HS all star team and our best player was named to the first team. The player that beat her out for POTY was an honorable mention. It's nice to know that the other coaches in our conference hate us enough to rob our player of the POTY she deserved. They have good reason to hate us since we completely dominated the conference going 51-5 largely due to our would be POTY.

so i’m trying this new thing where I’m being supportive of my daughter’s boyfriend and whatnot. he’s a big basketball fan and plays HS ball so I decide to attend one of his games tonight (he’s actually a really solid point guard). the big reason I went is a friend of mine was in town to ref the game and we were going to meet up for a couple beers after.

anywho, tonight I watched a high school basketball referee call travelling TWO TIMES while someone was in the middle of dribbling the basketball. this ref was at least 93 years old.

If it makes you feel any better, when I was living in Maryland I was voted MVP of my soccer team by my teammates, but the coach wasn't happy about that because his kid was on the team. At the end of the year, my trohpy said "Goalie" on it, even though I only played one half of a game at goal, and the coach's kid's trophy said "Top Goal Scorer." Completely hillarious petty stuff.

Speaking of chess, I figured out that this is my 10th year as the tournament director for the local youth chess tournament. Participation was "down to year to about 60 players. The first year I ran the tournament we had about 25.

The main thing I don’t miss about chess tournaments is getting paired against kids. It’s 50/50 that you’re going to destroy them and feel bad or they’re going to destroy you and you just got walked by a 9 year old.

P sure a 13 year old was getting help from his dad’s laptop on his “bathroom break” one time so horsefeathers that kid

I was playing an 8 year old years ago, and I'm good enough that I would probably have heard of any 8 year old that could beat me in Denver, but I was wrong. After 15 moves it was looking grim for me. Down a few pawns and in a worse, holed up position. But then he blundered his rook. I felt so bad. He was just sitting there staring at the board and looking glum. Probably went on like that for 20 minutes when I realized I hadn't hit the clock yet. (I wasn't used to playing with a clock.) As soon as I hit the clock he resigned. I wasn't sure if I should feel bad or not, as he was just hoping to win on time, I suppose. Savy for an 8 year old. He's rated around 2300 last I checked (at age 17)

I had a kid (who was probably about 10) with his phone in his lap and the parents of his opponent said that his dad was texting him tips from across the room. I felt really bad for the other kid but I had no proof. At the time there wasn't anything in the rules prohibiting having your phone with you during a tournament. This is an unrated tournament that is mostly for fun and a little trophy. It never occurred to me that a parent would help their 10 year old cheat another 10 year old out of a game of chess. My mistake.

I talked with the kid that had the phone and he withdrew before the next round. I haven't seen him at the tournament since. The kid he was playing against has come every year since then.
