I'm pretty annoyed that Chapman is pitching now and was not brought in with 2 on 0 out in the 8th. He doesn't have to throw both innings. He just needs to be in the highest leverage situation.

Yes but no matter how progressive Maddon is, he bends to the wishes of his players and Chapman wishes to pitch the 9th

Just don't do it in the playoffs

i hate the cardinals. i hate everything about them. i hate them with my life. i hate how they always pick crappy white guys who don't have any talent and then hey hit for an .850 ops and then do nothing else once they leave the team. i hate their attitude. i hate their fans. i hate that they always have some kind of crooked horseshoe up their butts. i hate that they've had a much better front office and farm system than the cubs for a very long time until recently. i hate playing them. i hate every comeback they have against us. and i cherish every victory we have against them

i'm very care right now about a game that literally doesn't matter. the cardinals can make that happen to me.

I hate how the Cardinals are going to win the WC and instead of nothing to lose like last year we will have everything to lose. Not saying that means we lose a potential series just that it's going to be a lot more nerve wracking than last year and potentially devastating if we don't win.

The playoffs will be nerve racking regardless. The opponent won't change that

I have to imagine the percentages were pretty high to win when we were up 3-1 and had bases loaded and nobody out in the 7th.

Fascinating sport.

baseball is bad again

Id love to run into the Cards in the playoffs. 0 fear of their team.

The two new kids look pretty good and Martinez is a very good pitcher. They played some pretty good games except for the second.

Don't care that we're still up by 12 in the division - this was a chance to put a foot on the throat of a long time division rival and often time bane of our existence. This was a chance to demoralize them and show them they have absolutely zero chance to make the playoff's this year and they didn't get it done.

Crap happens and you can't win every game, but losing Strop to injury, not scoring a run with bases loaded and nobody out, seeing Rondon pitch like complete crap after an injury, seeing Joe Smith come in and start fires/add fuel and seeing Lackey leave the game tonight - on top of losing 2 VERY winnable games may not be a huge deal, but it's not a little one either.

Maybe it just comes from watching too many lousy Cub teams since the 60's and worrying that I may not get a chance to ever see a Cub WS - tough not to worry and be a bit pessimistic.

We peaked at 95.6%: http://www.fangraphs.com/livewins.aspx?date=2016-08-14&team=Cubs&dh=0&season=2016

Losing doesn't bother me, but multiple improbabilities coming together to make us lose irk me.

What are you harping on? Pretty much everything that happens in a baseball game is an improbability until it happens. If we are looking at any at bat, it's improbable that the hitter hits a home run. It's also improbable that the pitcher strikes him out. But strikeouts and home runs do happen. This wasn't some weird game or something. You always think weird things happen, when, in reality, it's just baseball that happens.

You always complain about improbabilities and how "I know that that's going to happen sometimes, but why does it happen to us!?" It happens. Get used to it.

In hindsight, should we have left Grimm in?

In hindsight, clearly. Rondon wasn't ready to go today. And it would have be nice to work him in during a lower leverage spot. But, at the same time, we were currently playing the Cardinals. And we were leading and it was late. Really, it would have been better off if he was coming back at a different time. But if you think he's ready and you're in that spot, it's hard to say, "Well, maybe we'll just wait until sometime in the next series."

Yeah, that's not exactly a recipe for deep playoff success. I'm with the guy who has no fear of playing the Cardinals in the playoffs.

Yeah, it was largely just bad timing; Rondon has to get in sooner rather than later. You skip him tonight, and you end up already two weeks since the last time he pitched. They could have waited to use him in the 9th, but Chapman kinda needs to get in as well since he didn't get much work during the winning streak himself. Ideally it's Rondon shaking of the rust (to me his stuff and velocity looked good, which was encouraging) and he'll be back to kicking ass again.
