There was a time not long ago that I would've given up really good prospects to acquire that guy, and that's why I'm sitting in my bedroom and not an office at Wrigley.

Maybe Jeff Luhnow should have a seat next to you.

Just 3 seasons ago, Gomez was worth 8.5 wins in a single season.

FG still had him at 7.4 for that season. Hell, the next season FG and BR were reversed, with BR giving him a 4.8 and FG giving him a 5.7.

I actually just caught myself debating whether he is better than Szczur at this point.

Injuries have really derailed his career.

I wasn't saying it was crazy to say he was worth 8.5. I just knew that he was using bWAR (or maybe that terrible ESPN WAR).

I can't help myself, its the first result when I type in a player's name. I have been getting a little better at googling "[player's name] fangraphs" but guess I didn't do that this time.

I'm trying to find a way to justify bringing him in.

Honestly, as atrocious as his offense has been it's tough to find that justification. But his defense and baserunning are probably still better than Szczur's. So in a playoff pinch runner / defensive replacement role he'd probably be an upgrade. And on the off chance he'd get to take playoff at bats, we'd probably be looking at extra innings -- so the HR potential has some slightly increased value as well.

If there was a way to stash him on the roster and use him as a late-inning replacement in the playoffs I'd be all about it. But with the roster crunch being what it is, I have trouble seeing that unless the DFA Szczur. And with his extra club control, I don't see the point of that.

TL;DR: I would like for him to be this year's Quentin Berry, but I don't see it happening.

Probably around the same time that a lot of folks would've given up really good prospects to acquire him, many of whom are or were sitting in an office at various big league headquarters.
