Teix obviously has a much better career WAR, but would we have had the 2003 postseason run without Prior? Would we have made more postseasons with Teix over the length of his career, maybe a world series?

I don't know the answer.

So many whiffs that year

Two elite players in their prime and a lot of major leaguers. Seems like a pretty good draft to me.

Mike Fontenot was a first round draft pick???

I remember a LOT of meatballs thinking that was fantastic when the Cubs dumped Sosa for him.

he would have cost us Bryant

they'd have been much better from 2003 - 2010/11 but would have been bad enough in 2012 to still get him

That's not how the meme works.

Draft Tex was my first meme, it takes precedent

Mark Teixeira to retire. Was he the better choice?

In hindsight? No.

If a similar situation happens again, I would still go for the pitcher.

Logic.

Prior>Teixiera in 2001 had a higher ceiling based on OFP

As previously mentioned, Prior had a bad combo of Baker, fluke injuries and mistaken perfect mechanics

If there's a similar situation where there is two draftees with very high ratings *once in a decade* with the collegiate pitcher ranked higher, I would go for the player ranked higher despite the obvious risks with a pitcher.

there's neither hindsight nor logic being deployed here

It took such a ridiculous series of circumstances to derail Prior; I'd pick him again in a heartbeat.

It took one thing, hiring Dusty Baker.

Also him being a pitcher.

And a collision with Marcus Giles.

That is not really what hindsight means.

Also, I'm pretty close to personally believing that you should never ever draft a pitcher in the Top 5, and probably not in the Top 10.

BigRedSun/stitchface was likely referring to an old ESPN debate which I was on the wrong side of the argument having supported the drafting of Prior over Teixiera

I can't agree with never taking a pitcher in the top 10.

I will always give you credit for always sticking with Teixiera

You know who probably wouldn't have their career derailed by colliding with Marcus Giles? A hitter.

More to the point, with hindsight we know that Teixeira was worth 26 fWAR in his pre-FA years, that's an extremely high bar if we want to play kinda-hindsight with Prior and start doing what-ifs with his manager, workload, fluke injuries, etc.

Ftr, I have no idea why I answered no. It's obvious Teixiera was the better choice.
