I'm actually slightly excited by the move. His peripherals suck this year, but historically he's had pretty strong platoon splits against righties (not shocking for a sidearmer). As long as we don't let him face any lefties, he could be a pretty valuable addition.

And if he sucks, he's a mop-up guy we aren't paying anything of note for. No big loss.

Word on the tweet is the Cubs liked the sidearm look of Smith to contrast the rest of the righties in the pen.

If he can reliably get a couple of right handed batters out in the mid to late innings than this trade will be a steal. If not than Justin Grimm will just take his spot back. He didn't cost anything that we will miss so I don't mind them experimenting with a side arm pitcher.

Grimm never should have lost his spot to begin with. He's been pitching extremely well after struggling early on.

Geez I knew he was pitching better but I didn't realize how much.

Smith to the DL with a hamstring strain so Cahill can stay on the roster.

Or better stated, "Joe, you're a FA after the year, how about you sit down for a few weeks with a non-arm injury so you can be a part of the 15 man September pen and not have the stench of being DFA'd on you when you try to find a job next year?"

I'm all for acquiring a sidearm or submarine-style pitcher, but you know, some deception and funk would be nice. That's the whole point of throwing from these weird arm angles and release points. So far, batters seem pretty comfortable against him.

I hope this will serve as a lesson learned in future seasons -- Joe says he wants someone with some "funk" to create a different look. Cubs should, you know, actually acquire someone who fits that description and not just do it to please Maddon next time...

Joe Smith probably told Maddon this:
