what if he's freakishly good defensively while being passable offensively and we end up playing him there all year since that would actually provide positive value unlike soler was (yes i love jorge and yes he was doing better lately)?

I'm kind of just assuming something even crazier happens and we never see Soler again.

Man if we didn't sign Fowler we'd be looking at an OF of Bryant - Heyward - Szczur for as long as Soler's out. Which actually doesn't sound too bad, but Baez/LaStella would be Soler's real replacement.

I mean if you want to play what ifs, if we don't sign Fowler maybe Schwarber and whoever the CF is in Arizona that night don't collide for some reason and Schwarber's knee is still alive.

I'm curious on how many opportunities he gets. His main value in terms of winning games would be as a late game defensive replacement, but with Bryant/Fowler/Heyward being the default line up, there really isn't anywhere to upgrade, unless you want to push Baez to second and Bryant back to third (and even that would lead to one of the outfielders playing 'out of position'). If you give him starts, is it in left? I'm guessing he'll get one, maybe two games over Fowler over the next couple weeks, but I doubt we'll see enough to make any reasonable conclusions.

I'm really, really interested to see what kind of PAs he gives. I'd take something as simple as not going up there hacking, not getting beat by fastballs up, and not chasing obviously set up buried breaking balls away.

So pretty much not Javy at the plate?

I don't think it's crazy to think Almora would contribute more than Baez. Depends just how good those contact skills are and just how real the defense is.

He's going to spend the next 10 years becoming the Cubs' Jeter, and then history books will call Jeter the Yankees' Almora.

I know you don't gush over Almora's defense the way others do, but that's just plain cold.

He's not being sarcastic. He's Kyling Gato now.

I'm all-in. They've built a 120-win team according to peripherals. Everything they touch is magic.

Yeah I'm very curious to see how good he grades out defensively. As long as Heyward and Fowler are healthy, he'll get most of his time in LF; they're not going to slide the best player in the NL over for Almora. So to be a regular this season, he's probably going to need to put up a Crawford-ian UZR, which, who knows, could be doable.

btw, I'm not expecting to see Soler until, like, late July. They're going to take this really slow, and some combo of Javy/TLS/Almora will probably fine. Oh, and the fact that the division race is kind of over.

I was being sarcastic though.
